[SOLVED] KDE 4.5 Collapse
« on: October 02, 2010, 06:54:01 PM »
Hi, I recently raised a problem under "Can't start Dolphin or Konquerer in standard mode, which hasn't been resolved, and I now realise it's much bigger than that topic.

As I said under that topic:

"I've done a couple of updates recently, and it was after one of them that the trouble started. ...

I'm now suddenly getting this message on trying to start both Dolphin and Konquerer: "Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: Error loading 'kio_file'. "

(I can however start and use both these programs in Super User Mode.)

I can't work out any other way to move files to e.g. removeable media, which don't seem to show up in the Super User Mode.

When I try to open Wastebin I get: "Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: Error loading 'kio_trash'. "

Synaptic does not indicate any problems with any files.

Presumably I need to re-install KDE?  If so, how?? ...

I'm discovering more and more things which come up with the dreaded message - e.g. the "Home" icon on the desktop."

_steve kindly made a couple of suggestions, which haven't fixed this:

a) The problem sounds to me like you don't have ownership of your files in   /home/youruser/
If you have access to a terminal (eg konsole) you might try (as root)>
chown -R youruser:youruser /home/youruser/
(of course substitute whatever is correct for youruser)

su to root
chown -R rud:rud /home/rud/
(assuming your username is rud)

b) Check you don't have "run as different user" set in KDE edit menu ....  it should be blank...
goto> right click mouse PC button> Menu Editor> File Tools> Dolphin

It now seems clear that KDE is completely stuffed up, and presumably needs a reinstall; I cannot access any files, even to attach them to GMail.  I haven't dared to reboot (last was before the updates), in case KDE doesn't reappear.

By searching for KDE in Synaptic I get libkdeeduui4, which is said to be "Graphical desktop/KDE4 Graphical desktop/KDE4"

BUT I can't mark this to reinstall - it already is marked.  All I could do is mark to uninstall - but if I do that, will the whole desktop fall over before I can reinstall??  Or will it stay in memory so that I can reinstall??

Help!!

open pcc and create a new user, log out, log in with new user and see if the problems you are having are there too. The problem could be with a corrupt setting somewhere in your home directory.

If  muungwana suggestion doesn't work you can...

Well I'd install task-lxde. I would install gdm. I would switch display manager in the PCLinuxOS to GDM but not restart dm service. I would reboot and select lxde in the session manager from the GDM login manager. I would log into lxde. I would launch Synaptic. I would go into sections and the Graphical Desktop/KDE4 area and remove everything KDE4 . Then in Synaptic I would select

kde4-config
kdebase4
kdebase4-runtime
kdebase4-workspace
kdelibs4

I would log out of lxde then select KDE in the session manager. I would log into KDE. I would open Synaptic and re-install my other kde4 applications.

Or... I would boot my KDE4 live CD and to a quick re-install using the exisiting partitions.

Thanks, guys. Looks promising.  Questions - excuse my ignorance:  a) what are "pcc" and "dm service", and b) where/how do I download the wherewithal to create a KDE live CD, assuming this is different from the 2010 install CD I made??

pcc means "pclinuxos control center". it should be on your menu named "configure your computer" or "pcc" or "pclinuxos control center", i dont know how it shows up on your menu but it is there, click to open it then click "system" then "manage users on system" then click "add user" and then fill up the entry fields and click ok to finish. YOu will be asked to enter root's password after you click its entry on the menu

The new just created user will show up on the log in screen when you log out, log out, select this user and log back in and try to do something that show a problem on your current user session.

Just a note, if you did the latest updates, it was a biggie. In the log that opens up in synaptic after the installs were complete, one thing it said.
Close synaptic the RE-Boot...That seems to have fixed all my problems.. ;)

Thanks Wildman.  I didn't notice that log message, and haven't rebooted.  Dare I risk losing the whole KDE setup?!

I'm also afraid that might happen if I follow muungwana's suggestion!

I just completed the upgrades, and had what looks like the same Dolphin/Konqueror problem. On reboot, all is peachy. ;)

Many thanks, old-polack - your first crossed with my last.  And many thanks also to Wildman - clever lad!

That message seems to have been tucked away fairly inconspicuously in the after-upgrade log; seems it might well be a useful precaution to reboot after any substantial upgrade.

Can this post become a sticky, as I've found it solved a problem I had with Dolphin and I feel it would help others who've suffered the same problem.

I missed the synaptic message,  when installing the KDE 4.5.1 updates. I got the kio slave problem initially and on reboot, that issue resolved itself. However, I subsequently found that I suffered a problem with Dolphin, freezing up for about 30 seconds; when trying to transfer files onto a USB external hard drive, for transferring files between the laptop and desktop.

As a result of doing a search, I found this thread and followed Texstar's advice to reinstall the KDE packages he mentioned and I'm pleased to say that Dolphin is now working properly.
