[workaround/abandon] Another banshee is crashing post
« on: October 01, 2010, 01:02:16 AM »
See last post for workaround/abandon

=================================

Fixed by installing gio-sharp via synaptic

=======================================

I read the software request for 1.8 Banshee and went to the website to read the release notes and got curious about what version I was running. So I opened my Kickoff menu and typed in Banshee and almost immediately it crashed. Starting it from Konsole threw a huge exception report.

I am running KDE 2010.07 fully updated and have never installed anything outside the repos.

I completely removed and reinstalled Banshee 1.7.6, same result. I completely removed again, and deleted the .banshee directory under .config and reinstalled, Again, crash with same huge exception.  A lot of the errors are related to Mono so I reinstalled Mono. (removing it was going to pull a lot of things out)

Still same result. I can't recall the last time I used Banshee but it was running ok (except for the known crash with playback). Since then I have not done anything specific to Banshee or Mono. Just been running updates every day or two.

I tried it with a new user and the same thing happens.

The only thing close to MONO/Banshee that I changed was to install the moonlight add-on for firefox.

The first two warnings are:
Code: [Select]
** (Banshee:14260): WARNING **: The following assembly referenced from /usr/lib/banshee-1/Backends/Banshee.Gio.dll could not be loaded:
     Assembly:   gio-sharp    (assemblyref_index=7)
     Version:    2.14.0.0
     Public Key: 35e10195dab3c99f
The assembly was not found in the Global Assembly Cache, a path listed in the MONO_PATH environment variable, or in the location of the executing assembly (/usr/lib/banshee-1/Backends/).

** (Banshee:14260): WARNING **: Could not load file or assembly 'gio-sharp, Version=2.14.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=35e10195dab3c99f' or one of its dependencies.

Looking in Synaptic gio-sharp is not installed. MONO(gio-sharp) is listed as a dependency of Banshee. Looking in /usr/lib/banshee-1/Backends/ Banshee.Gio.dll is there.

Is anyone else seeing this problem?

I don't know if this blog posting helps some of you smarter fellers.

Update: Not Fixed

The first time I started it, it opened ok but part way through playback of first song it bombed out (application closed). While the first song was playing I had unchecked a few extensions that I do not use. Wiki context and Last.fm support.

Now Banshee starts into a hung state. There are some errors about multimedia keys but those have been around for awhile. I really hope 1.8 solves some of these long standing issues (playback/multimedia keys, etc)

update

I completely unintstalled Banshee and Banshee MTP support (separate package in synaptic). Then I deleted ./config/banshee and /usr/lib/banshee

Reinstalled and without touching anything (extensions, etc) I rescanned my library and picked a song to play. I minimized Banshee to look at the Konsole and when I maximized Banshee I got the menu window header and the borders with a blank light grey background. The window will minimize and maximize but nothing is displayed, only the title bar. Clicking on the X gave me the application is not responding dialog box.

It starts with only errors about the multimedia keys support, which as I mentioned has been a long standing issue and the final error  was: [Warn  17:19:35.299] Failed to load media-player-info file for

The line is cutoff like that

Can anyone duplicate or verify it banshee works for them?

This and similar bugs are being reported to Banshee developers

Starting Banshee with: banshee-1 --disable-dbus

seems to resolve the playback hang and the grey screen of death and I was able to add the multimedia key extension and use the keyboard keys.

BUT trying to install and remove some extensions did cause it to crash again while playing.

I give up. I like Banshee (a lot) but its been problematic for the year I have been trying to use it. I'll try again when 1.8 makes it into repos.

FYI 1.8.0 claims to have fixed the Notification area bug and the notification demon bug.

Well my new best friends are Clementine in KDE and Exaile in Gnome. I keep trying Amarok over and over but it just isn't the same anymore. It is lke going back and finding that sexy chick you once knew has turned into a large marge. I've never used Banshee since it requires a bunch of mono stuff and I've never had mono stuff work with a toot in Linux. I'll check into the banshee update shortly.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Thanks Texstar.

Im growing frustrated with Banshee. To me it's like Mama Bear, the application is just right for features over simplicity but it's been problematic for the year I've tried to settle on it.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner I had a stick of memory go bad so I lost about a day figuring that out. Luckily i had some compatible, but slower memory to 'steal' out of a test box.

I tried exaile and it just didn't suit me. I thought I loaded Clementine but don't have it now. I'll take another look at it.

One of the things I like about Banshee is it's ripping options. Real simple and has a simple check box for error correction and a simple slider for setting the ogg quality level. It also does the directory structure I like by default. But I have Asunder to fall back on for ripping.

clementine

I can crash it at will by checking 'Rain' under extras in the menu. But nice player all in all but no ripper. I hope we can pull Banshee together.

I'm tempted to drop all my Mono based apps since there are not that I can't find valid alternatives.

The problem is not PCLinux related. Sabayon has the same problem. The only version running on KDE 4.5.x is 1.6.1.
( or lower ). It should  be possible to go back to the older version. But I can't find it in the repos. Maybe when the Gnome 2.30 is correct installed (inside the KDE environment ) then it works...but I don't know.
