How do I view hard drives in Dolphin
« on: September 30, 2010, 02:31:05 PM »
Hi all.  I just installed 2010.7.  How do I view my hard drives?  When I had dolphin in PCLOS 2007 in the places panel it showed all my hard drives.  In 2010 I can't see them anywhere.  I had PLCOS do a full auto install so I don't even know how it partitioned them.  It seems my biggest complaint about Linux always comes back to the file manager.  I still like Dolphin better than Konq but Xandros File Manager was the only file manager that I ever really liked.

EDIT:  I plugged in an external harddrive and it showed everything like I expected, so its only the internal drive containing my /, swap, /home partitions I can't see.  Or does 2010 not create a separate partition for / and /home?  Even if thats the case it would still be nice to be able to see how much free space is used/available on the drive.

Try hitting F9 ??

You can always open KDiskFree.
It's under "More Applications | Monitoring" in the Application Launcher.

Dolphin does not show the OS partitions by default .......  it does show all other partitions attached to the system in the left panel.

You can use    df   in a terminal to see the usage of all mounted partitions .......   or if you prefer a GUI you can use    kdf   in the terminal to launch KDiskFree.

I don't think any file manager has ever showed you your swap partition as it isn't mounted under / like everything else. Checking swap use is nevertheless easy in several programs: try looking at the "Memory" information module in kinfocenter.

On the Places panel in Dolphin or Konqueror "/" is simply called "Root" and your home directory "Home", but it won't show you the free space on the partition. To see the free space you could do what Rudge and JohnBoy suggested and run KDiskFree -- or "df" in a terminal.

Dolphin does not show the OS partitions by default .......  it does show all other partitions attached to the system in the left panel.

Ok this is basically what I had found in my searching.  Is their anyway to get dolphin to show these partitions? I just find it easier to find things when I know I am starting at the base of the partition.  I did find a setting in Dolphin to show the remaining available space in the home folder.  So that helps some.  But I'd still like to see all drives in the places menu.  Basically its just easier for me to navigate.

I like guis.  I come from the Windows world and use Windows 99% of the time due to proprietary software I need for work. But I got my wife converted over to PCLOS in 2007.  She uses it 90% of the time. She only needs windows for printing some coupons that use propreitary print drivers in windows.  Anyway, I did find kdiskfree and that helps to see what I have as well.

I just miss the ability to right click on the drive in the browser to see what I have available and being able to start at the root of each drive while searching for files.

If you think of anything else let me know.  Thanks to everyone.

I was looking at my PCLOS 2007 install on my other machine.  On that machine Dolphin has an entry known as "media:/" in the places section.  This is different than "/media/".  It is that place know as media:/  that I am looking for.  But when I enter it manually in 2010 I get a message that say "invalid protocol"

That's a dead item. From Synaptic, install package kio-sysinfo.  When done installing, open konqueror web browser and, in the Location bar, type        sysinfo:/          then press the Enter key.

Thanks O-P. Sorry to hear that is a dead item.  It was a fantastic feature in Dolphin. I'll give sysinfo:/ a try.  Judging by the name that sounds like it might be what I want.  Will this work in Dolphin as well or is it somehow specific to Konquerer?  I would assume if I type in the address in dolphin it would find it too. Thanks again.

If you type it into Dolphin, I expect it would launch Konqueror to display it .....

This works for me Fargo:

Configure Your Desktop >> Hardware >> Removable Devices

and under  "Automount at Login" add a check mark against the internal drives/partitions you want listed and they should then show up in Dolphin.

As the name suggests I believe this feature is really meant for External Drives & Devices but I find it works perfectly well for internal drives and partitions.

May need to restart your desktop.

Note: the other option in this section is "Automount at Attach"
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Are you saying that doing this will show the root partition and the home partition as separate partition items in the left pane in Dolphin?

Just to add to all the previous excellent information

In PCLOS 2010 KDE there is now a 'shelf' widgit. It can be configured to show drives, folders etc.

Click on a drive and it opens in Dolphin.

I have no need to do my root and home as Dolphin already gives me direct access to them but I use it for my other partitions,

I don't use it myself, which is why I asked, as that is the function the OP is looking for, as I understand it.   ;)
