(SOLVED) Streaming music of NFS shared files network
« on: September 25, 2010, 01:15:39 PM »
Now that I have my network up and running (NFS file sharing)  I tried to play (stream) music on one computer from the other.  The music program (Amarok) opened but nothing played.  The song did not show up in the play list.  I could load the files I wanted to play from the network  in the file area to the left, however, I could not add them to the play list.

I also tried to open a text file, again the program (open office writer) started to open, then nothing.

Is this normal?

Is is possible to make streaming work between linux networked computer?  If so,  what do I need to do to get this to work?

Thanks for any help our suggestions.

Check the permissions of your mount points and also the shared directories and files.

Check the permissions of your mount points and also the shared directories and files.

I can copy the files from one computer to the other.  I tried moving the music file to the directory specified in the mount point, however, that did not make a difference.

Check the permissions of your mount points and also the shared directories and files.

Sounds like what JohnBoy said.. a permission problem. Make sure you allow execution, user can mount and not read only of files on the export share and check the mounting point on the computer where you mounted the share(s) and make sure you have read, write and execute for owner group and others. You can go to the mounted folder as root and right click and properties and permissions and make the changes there.

I will do as you suggested.  What is interesting is that I can open picture files, and PDF files but not text or music files.  Let me see if I find the mount point file and make the needed changes.

As far as music files goes ......  I don't use Amarok so cannot really comment .......  but I do use VLC, and have just used VLC to play between the two PCs here.

I have a Music partition shared out on PC1, and that share mounted in PC2.

I opened VLC on PC2, choose to open a directory from within the mounted share partition, and VLC is presently playing the files from that directory.

It is doing so in a 'streaming' fashion ......  in that it 'sucks' a bit from the file, plays it and then gets some more ..............  it does not just load the whole file and play it, as I have seen previously with some players.

I did nothing special at all with the shares.
I would have most of the VLC plugins installed.

Sorry I cannot be any help with Amarok .......  maybe someone who uses it would have some better ideas.

regards.

Sounds like something I should try.  I'm not married to Amarok so I wil load VLC and give it a try.

Is the mounted folder within another directory?  I'm having a bit of trouble finding it.

Go into PCC in network sharing and configuring NFS shares and see what your mounting points you assigned are and go to them and check the permissions. I would guess they are in the /mnt folder

Thank you, I'll go take a look.  Once I change the mount points on the directory should I then reset the mount point using access NFS directories... ?

Bullitt I am not sure I understand your last comment and I am no instructor either. Let me say this on your export computer set the share for read and write. On the computer you are mounting that share on you can go to the folder where it is mounted and as root change the permissions by right clicking on the folder go to properties and permissions and make the group and other permissions to read like the owners permissions if you want everyone to be able to use the share. As an example on my server I have a hard drive that is mounted /mnt/hd. I set it up as an nfs share to be available as /mnt/hd and with rw permissions. On a computer on my network I run PCC and network sharing and configure nfs shares. Once at that page I click search servers. It takes awhile for it to search but when it displays the export servers available. Click on the server(s) listed and it will open the list of share available for that server. Click on the share and click on mounting point. It will select a mounting point for you with the same name as the export share name. I choose the default share name and then click on options and advanced and open it up. Check user and uncheck noexec after you check user. OK all that and then mount it. That will mount the share and write it to the fstab. In PCC under system and manages services the nfs client and server, netfs and rpcbind need to be checked to start at boot for them to be mounted on boot.
Now go to the mounted folder that is the share and change the permissions as I said above. I hope this helps.

Yes, that helped a great deal.  When I first setup the shared mount point I left all the settings alone.  After looking things over last evening I was thinking that I would need to change the advanced settings in the mount point within "Share Drives and Directories in NFS".  For example I now have read only-yes, and secured connection-yes.  And I also understand that I need to go to the folder/directory I chose to share and change the permission settings allowing others to view and modify content.

Once all this is done I will set the mount point again through "Access NFS Shared Drives..." search for servers and set the new mount point with the new settings.

Please verify that I understood your directions correctly.

Thanks, Bullitt

Hi Bullitt, You said
For example I now have read only-yes, and secured connection-yes.  And I also understand that I need to go to the folder/directory I chose to share and change the permission settings allowing others to view and modify content.

If you want to allow modifying you need to export the share as read and write and mount it on the other computer as read-only - no and user - yes (checked) and noexec unchecked. Noexec gets checked automatically when you check user so uncheck it after you check user.

Moniac,

I am with you on most you have outlined.  However, could you clarify where I will see/change user and noexec settings.  Will they be in the folder properties or in the NFS share drives..., mount directory advance setting?  I know I'm very close to getting this thing right with your help.  Thank you.

Bullitt

I have tried to make an instruction pdf but I can't seem to find a way to post it here. Maybe you could pm me your email and I will email it to you. Moniac
