Laptop shutsdown during installation
« on: September 24, 2010, 04:26:13 AM »
Hello,

I have been using our beloved distro since it's latest release back in April. Lately, I've decided to try the LXDE version because I've felt the KDE version was a little sluggish for my aging Toshiba Satellite A65-S126. Here's the problem: about 1/4 along the installation, the laptop would totally shut off, as if someone pulled the plug off. I tried it several times and it's the same thing. I even tried putting the KDE version disc (which I used before to install) and it's the same thing. I'm suspecting it's overheating, but I would like to hear if anybody else had this problem before. Thanks for reading my question!

Why should it overheat now when it didn't do it before in the same case?

May be some RAM issue or bad contact?

Yeah, it puzzles me too. I really haven't tried re-seating the RAM sticks. I will do that and will post my results. Thanks

Ok, sort of good news. I removed one stick and tried re-installing...VOILA! It went through. I couldn't be happier. However, I now lost functionality with my Logitech Trackball (usb) and my Netgear WP511 wireless card (which i believe is using Atheros 5xxx). This is weird because when i was trying LiveCD, both devices were working fine. I'm doing Synaptic updates right now, and hopefully they get fixed. Will post results later

Man, this is getting annoying. I did the updates but it didn't help. I figure the USB and PCMCIA ports are disabled somehow. I tried putting a flash drive and it didn't show activity. I did 'lsusb' but did not show any results. Is there a way to test my ports? Pls help!
