RE: Dated ISOs

Can someone tell me for sure if the quarterly isos are being updated from time to time after they are made available?  If so then are there different versions with the same name on different mirrors?  I may need to hide some links if that be the case.

When it is time/it is needed, new ISOs are created. This is done quarterly or when the volume of updates reaches a point that the current ISOs require a large download of updates after HDD installation. The new ISOs are uploaded to ibiblio and from there are synced to the other repos.

From what you say, it seems that some repos do not remove older ISOs. Is this what you mean?

Hi neal.

I understand how the quarterly works but I'm wondering if the iso might be modified again during that same quarter and not have it's name changed.   There have been times when the dev who creates an iso  forgets to put something in and has to re-upload again replacing the iso.  Would someone do that and not update the name to xxxx-2011.2 for example?

My concern is that a user may get a different version from a mirror that hasn't synced for some time.  Some of the mirrors in my iso list haven't synced since early January.

From message #6 above by texstar:

Please note that is a dated ISO and you might run into Synaptic update problems. Last I heard Slax took over the Gnome remaster.
I'm just wondering if he is referring to an iso that may have been modified since a certain date or since it was originally uploaded and not renamed.

When, how and if the mirrors sync up is up to them. So in the case where they haven't synced recently, it might be prudent to not show them in the list until they do.

Just info for those interested:
If an ISO is to be modified, i.e. a new ISO created during a quarterly cycle, the new ISO should have a new version number. For example, if I create PCLinuxOS-LXDE-2011-3 and then due to some need, must do another ISO a month later, it would be ~2011-4. If the change is within the same month, it can be versioned as ~2011-3.1.

OK neal.   That answers my question.

All the isos versioned the same should be the same iso regardless of the mirror it comes from.  No worries.
