Where is java?
« on: September 23, 2010, 03:43:49 PM »
Just downladed java-1.5.0-sun in synaptic.
When trying to run a program that uses it (to java), i get
Code: [Select]
No JDK found to run IDEA. Please validate either IDEA_JDK or JDK_HOME points to valid JDK installation
idea.sh: line 67: /bin/java: No such file or directory
idea.sh: line 67: exec: /bin/java: cannot execute: No such file or dire

From what i understand, java path is not being found.

Check /usr/bin and see if it's in there?  Then chg line 67 in that script to point to it instead.

Else open a terminal and type:
which java
and see if it finds anything.

You also might have multiple versions of java installed.  Check synaptic

Also, try:

username@host ~]$ java -version

and see what it tells you.

i am not sure if you want Sun Java run time environment, jre.

this is for sun java run time environment, i use synaptic and install it.
on left panel, click custom ( bottom), click tasks (centre), now on right panel, you should see task-java, right click, mark for installation, apply. done

Code: [Select]
[don-bolas@localhost don-bolas]$ which java
/usr/bin/java
under "/usr/bin" there is an 'direct access' that points to "/etc/alternatives/java" where there is another 'direct access' that points to "/usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.5.0.22-sun/bin/java" which i think is a folder. So i suppose java is in the right place, right?

Code: [Select]
[don-bolas@localhost don-bolas]$ java -version
java version "1.5.0_22"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_22-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.5.0_22-b03, mixed mode)

java version "1.6.0_20"

As Wayne and Old-Polack suggested, you most likely want the JDK (which includes the JRE, too, BTW).

Syntaptic is doing the right thing, but the problem lies within the script "idea.sh."  Inspect it to see if it's setting IDEA_JDK or JDK_HOME correctly.  It might be setting them either not at all (and assuming they're set in the user's environment) or merely setting them incorrectly.  You can edit it to set the variables correctly or modify the hard paths to the JDK.
