No sound playing movie files
« on: September 23, 2010, 02:47:22 AM »
my apology, i realised i posted at the wrong place. so i do it here.

i have just installed pclos 2010 gnome.

when i play rmbv file on totem player, it is ok
however, mkv, flv, mp4 files playing : no sound, video ok

GNOME Mplayer, all files above play OK.

Am i missing some codec? or installation problem?

Help appreciated.
thanks

Odd, they play fine on my install. Is task-multimedia installed?

hello Xero,
thanks for your tip. no i did not yet install any codec.

so i use synaptic to install task-multimedia.

ha, what a strange issue: now totem does not even start playing the last workable .rmbv file, while 'maintaining no sound for .flv, .mkv, .mp4

Have you done a full update? Try logging out and back in.  Gnome-mplayer is my secondary player, but not really had an issue with Totem (movie player) myself, plays flv's and the like fine, just been watching a bunch of stuff I pulled down off ABC iView actually.

hello Xero,  well, i am new to pclos, and did not do an update. however, i am surprised totem does not have sound.
anyway, i went to Synaptic, and do a full update. that was way too long,, nearly 2 hours on 20Mb/s broadband...
that did it, now all those files worked on totem.
surprise...sigh...
thanks again

Nice to hear it's solved...
Remember for the future: before you install something in Synaptic, press
Reload >> Mark All Upgrades >> Apply >> Apply and do then what you want!

(and I think you can get a faster repository: go to PCMenu (blue circle in the panel at the bottom of the screen) >> Software Center >> Repository Speed Test)

2 hours? Most odd. I'm on a 4MB connection, and it took me less than that, less than an hour on recent install actually. Suggest you open Synaptic, choose Settings from top menu, then Repositories, then look thru the list and find one that seems more "local" to you. My ISP is one of the mirrors, so I use them, and works very quickly for me. :)

Like I said,
run Repository Speed Test, and you'll get the fastest repo available for you
then 500MB will be something of minutes to download - and a little bit longer than that minutes to 'install' it after the download

thanks for your suggestion.
it is an interesting assumption, and i really hope it worked that way.

after 2 hours update, eventually i found out that this computer no longer work on network browsing.. :(

reading from another forumer at pclos gnome forum, i tried his suggestion of reinstall nautilus and the computer now regain its old working on network browsing... :D

then on second computer , i installed that PCLOS 2010 gnome, just as the first computer, totem player does not have sound,
so i proceeded with similar update, but this time i applied your method of running test and pick the fast one.. so end result is, it is just faster, far from being a minute. it took one hour !!, nevermind, after that, totem did not have sound!! and nautilus could not browse network..

so i tried second time without success. too bad, better gave up on second installation.

He never said it would "take a minute", read it again. Anyway, you seem to have problems, and no patience to solve them, so good luck with whatever else you choose.
