Is your phone VoIP ? - Cell ? - Land line ?

Landline.

Then all you should have to do is plug in your modem from your computer to the landline and use the software in synaptic.

56k PCI fax modems are fairly cheap and easy to install

Just plug in to the PCI slot in your computer

Prices are from about $15.00 US - up to what ever you are willing to spend
