Much appreciation to AndrzeJL for the installtion guide for KDE4 iso on old machines. That enabled me to install onto an old IBM Thinkpad T22 that has lost one of its memory slots (due to failure).

I had to make a slight change to the initial steps in that:
(i) I selected 'console' from the boot menu
(ii) Logged in at the console and then started X with the command:

Code: [Select]
kdm --nodaemon    This gave me the safe mode without having to crash X.
(iii) From there onwards everything in the tip worked as advertised and I am enjoying LXDE on top of a KDE iso install.

I had to do this because when I tried the method described X kept coming back as if nothing had happened and the machine would lock up. The keyboard would die and I kept having to reboot.
