Unfortunately, the resulting disk played neither on the computer nor on my rather ancient dvd player. So I will dabble with the suggested alternate method.

Thanks again,
ebvt

If your DVD player will not play AVI files then it is pointless saving the .avi file to a DVD.

There should be some indication on the machine which would tell you what it is capable of ......  or the manual if you have it.

All players will play DVD Video disks.
The newer players will play data disks with video files saved on them ......  for certain types of video files. They may play MP3 audio files also and display Jpeg pictures.
The older machines will not have these functions.

regards.

Just tried the DVDStyler with the avi file. Result: DVDStyler error details: XML parsing error "not well formed at line 1". Would that bloody thing ever work?? Even in the computer?

Thanks for all your help....ebvt

Seems you are left with reformatting the file in Avidemux to MPEG-PS and then DVDStyler should have no bother creating a DVD Video ISO (fileset) with it.

Leiche, ich werde langsam schreiben - habe die info, was soll ich damit anfangen?  Ooops, I forgot I am on an english board...
Here's what's on the mediainfo:

General
AVI: 699MiB, 1H 59 min                                            Writing library:Virtual Dub build 29963/release
1Video stream: MPEG-4 Visual (XViD)
1 Audio stream MPEG Audio (MP3)

Video
681Kbps 640*480 (4:3),at 29.970 fps, MPEG-4 Visual (XViD) (Advanced Simple@L5) (BVOP)

Audio
128 Kbps, 44.1 KHz, 2 channels, MPEG Audio (MP3) (Version 1) (Layer 3) (joint stereo/MS stereo)

Any suggestions anybody? I feel like at fish out of water!

My idea...
Open Avidemux, load the file, click on the reiter Auto >  Optical-Disc > DVD save the output as <myfile>.mpg. It's take a while (drink one until one hundret coffee). Next step open dvdstyler and load <myfile>.mpg, for my german readers i wrote a article about dvdstyler http://kellerleiche.bplaced.net/index/dvdstyler.html .
If you like a article about avidemux read this http://kellerleiche.bplaced.net/index/avidemux_pclos.html
Any other questions?

I just d/l'd avidemux but can't find it anywhere in the menu. Where is it supposed to reside? I typed it into a console but that didn't help.

Try a space after the avide*  , before you press tab  key

The space behind the avide*   worked and I installed A.gtk. It is running but I have no idea what to apply where. When I drop the avi file into Avidemux I can at least now see and hear the movie. I found the following tutorial  http://mulder.dummwiedeutsch.de/etc/adm_wink/avi2dvd.htm   (Sorry, Leiche, not my choice of words!). Can you check if I should proceed that way?

When you drop the movie into Avidemux, do as Leiche instructed ..........  on the top menu select

Auto  -- Optical Disc --  DVD

Then select

File -- Save -- Save Video

I just put the 2.1Gb file in DVDStyler and get the same DVDStyler error as before. XML parsing error "not well formed at line 1". I'm almost at the end of my patience....

Can you report the information That MediaInfo gives you about the file produced by Avidemux?

Presumably this file is playable in your video player on PCLOS ?
