Unfortunately, the resulting disk played neither on the computer nor on my rather ancient dvd player. So I will dabble with the suggested alternate method.

If your DVD player will not play AVI files then it is pointless saving the .avi file to a DVD.
There should be some indication on the machine which would tell you what it is capable of ...... or the manual if you have it.
All players will play DVD Video disks.
The newer players will play data disks with video files saved on them ...... for certain types of video files. They may play MP3 audio files also and display Jpeg pictures.
The older machines will not have these functions.
