[SOLVED] Pidgin problem
« on: September 21, 2010, 09:36:37 AM »
After the last big update my Pidgin client now is
greyed out when I try to use it to submit IMs,
thus, I can't send any messages. I haven't
received any IMs to see if this problem exists
when I receive messages.

I reinstalled Pigin, but it still has the problem.

I'm using the latest KDE upgrades, et al.

What do you mean Greyed Out?

Does it launch OK?

Is your account still OK?

A bit more detail to explain the problem please.

regards.

I hope this explains the problem clearer.

I can launch Pidgin and see my buddies list.
To send a message, you click on a person and
a popup box appears that has fields to enter a
message, and a field to see the response from
the person you sent the IM to.

Now, when I click on a person to send an IM to,
the popup appears, but instead of showing the
fields in the box for writing/reading IMs, the box
appears as a greyed out rectangle with no visible
fields to enter/read IMs. In other words, the box
is just one color with no discernible fields.

Thus, I cannot send IMs (nor probably receive)
because I have no way to enter a message in the
appropriate field.

This started happening with the last major upgrade
of KDE. Up til then I had no problems with Pidgin.

I hope that makes the problem (and solution) clear now.

It sure makes the problem a lot clearer .....  whatever about the solution!   ;D ;D

I have never met with such a situation.  :(

Hopefully someone who has will come by and let us know of their solution.

In the meantime please check that libpurple is available to Pidgin ...

In a terminal

Code: [Select]
locate libpurple
should give something like this

Code: [Select]
/usr/lib/libpurple.so.0
/usr/lib/libpurple.so.0.7.3

regards.

EDIT
I see you have help from the top   :D

New information.

I got an IM, and the popup box worked normally, and
showed all the fields and sent message. So it seems
the problem only exists when I try to initiate a message.

I did notice, I think, because it happened real fast, that
what seems to be occurring  is that an additional image
is being overlaid  (or deletes) an initial (correct?) popup.
But it happens so fast I can't really tell if that's what's going on.

Also, libpurple was installed; I reinstalled it, but no change.

Which version do you have?  I have 2.7.3 and it works here.

Since I don't know what service you are using, I tested with yahoo using pidgin and kopete and I started the IM conversation through Pidgin and it seems to be OK here. I'm not able to duplicate your issue unless more information is provided.

OK, I fixed (?) the problem, or more accurately, I got the popup to act normally again.

I started right-clicking on names, and started playing with different settings.
Somehow, I must have reset (?) the behavior back to normal.

So, for now, it's working again, and I can send IM messages.
Now, I hope it stays this way, and whatever happened to mess it up won't happen again.
