1. Install prelink from Synaptic Package Manager

2. Open terminal konsole su to root and type /usr/sbin/prelink -avmR

3. While still in terminal edit /usr/bin/startkde with your favorite text editor. Add the line highlighted in bold to startkde.

export KDE_NO_IPV6=True
export KDE_USE_IPV6="no"
export KDE_IS_PRELINKED=1

So what would be the line to add, and where, on a Gnome install? /usr/bin/startgnome ?

I'm assuming the command: /usr/sbin/prelink -avmR  would be the same?

*edit* oops, just noticed Slax beat me to it on that question ;D

I don't know why anyone runs into problems, Mandriva has been running it forever.

I don't think it's a problem, just a miscommunication. The instructions say run a command, Tex said it is setup to run as a cron job, but KDE needs a changed setup file. The question still remains do any of the other desktops need a special command, script, or changed setup? If not, then we are good to go.  :)

+1. There are no problems. There is a great post by Texstar on how to run prelink with KDE4 desktop. I used it and it gives great results and is easy to setup. Now I need to know whats the recipe for running prelink with gnome / lxde and so on. There is no problem. There is curiosity.

Give our boys some time Dude ;). I dont believe they would leave us like that. Maybe there is no easy way of doing this? Maybe they dont know it yet...

I bet one day someone will find it. For now - hang tight!

Installed it today in Gnome-Zen-mini, I can't tell any difference really, but I am using the a64 kernel so maybe it's already optimized my system somewhat?

I did note a fair drop in ram usage at idle though, almost 10%, while CPU usage at idle went up, almost double on one core, with a smaller increase on the second core.

Well just curious why you posted this then:

How to enable prelink on other DE's?
Specifically gnome?

I also read that some put prelink to cron job? Should we do that?
