MyLiveCD DVD boots to CLI

After I made my remaster and burned the iso to a DVD successfully, I tried to boot it.  It did boot to CLI, then I could log in and issue startx and get to my KDE desktop.

Is that what should be happening?  Everything seems to be there when I do get it booted.

One of my remasters behaved like that on the first run. But on the next try, the cli prompt appeared, but I waited a few seconds & it continued to the desktop n it's own.
Maybe give another try, & wait a bit.

Thanks, but no joy... I waited 5 minutes, but it just gets to the "localhost login:" point.  After I enter my username and pw, I get a cli prompt and when I enter startx, it continues and boots into my KDE Desktop.

I am a point & click fella too. But to burn iso's I use k3b.
From your konsole output message it looks like you use growisofs, rt? I have no experience with that, but a couple of observations.
Did you check out the remaster sticky posts? Start with #1 for current procedure.

1. Your report shows burning at 8x. Burn at slowest speed is safest
2. Confirm your md5sum
3. I didn't see your dvd app in the repo. Recommended apps are available in the repos via synaptic, which have been tested & approved for pclinuxos. Installing outside apps are not encouraged & basically unsupported. Lotsa choices there.

I had a similar issue from an actual install..  for me changing the KDM theme fixed the problem (the theme was causing KDM login to crash and drop to CLI)

johnmart, thanks for taking the time to look over that stuff...

Yes, I did lots of reading, but I must be missing something.  That post you referenced is what got me this far.  I even printed it out for reference.  Plus, after 5 wasted DVD's, the first one at K3B's "Auto" speed setting, I followed with the rest at 4x.  Then I found another post where K3B had difficulty with DVD's doing this, and it recommended using growisofs from cli.  btw - The actual disc recording in K3b is done by the command line utilities cdrecord or cdrkit, cdrdao, and growisofs.


travisn000 - I'll look into the KDM issue.  But, it seems since I've not changed KDM from Texstar's default, and he apparently has no issues, it should work.

Thanks for the info re. growisofs. I recognise the others, but since I didn't see it in the repo, thought it was an outsider. 
Did you use use a custom mylivecd command?
Do you have autologon activated for your user?

I tried to use a command to exclude my /home folders because they exceeded mylivecd's size limits.

I ended up having to move all /home folders and three large .VirtualBox vdi files to an external drive to get mylivecd to complete.

No I don't have autologon activated.   I didn't see any reference to doing that, and I always thought that was not a good idea. 
Could that be it?

I probably should have posted this last night, but..  I was tired..  

..determining if it is an issue with KDM is pretty easy; when you get dropped to a CLI, log in a root, run the command "init 3" to stop all desktop related services, or just kill them manually (kdm, x, etc..). Once you are sure they are not running, try and start kdm manually.  If it fails you will see error messages, otherwise you should see it load.  

I suggested this because the KDM (..or GDM) is the major thing that loads after plymouth finishes and the X starts..  when it encounters errors it is still possible to bypass it by logging in at CLI and starting X manually.  ..there may be other components and other issues with KDM/GDM that would cause the symptoms you describe, but it would require some digging into the boot process / logs to get clues.  Have you looked into the logs when at CLI?

Thanks for the additional input...

At LiveCD cli, "try and start kdm manually"...  As pointed out, I'm a point and click guy.  Is the command just "kdm"?  If not, please give me a hint.

Logs - didn't think of that since it was a DVD booting, where are the logs so I can look at them the next time I attempt to boot my DVD?  And, is there a specific section I should look for?

kdm is just the command "kdm"  

If you want to make sure it isn't running, try "killall kdm" and / or "service dm stop"


As far as logs... I'll have to google it    

...it seems there is one at /var/messages/logs or something similar, and a few others...  I can never remember..

..look in /var/log/boot.log and /var/log/messages

Now this is just plain quizzical...  The rr2010.iso I created with MyliveCD drops me to cli boot on both my desktops, but on my netbook, it boots all the way to KDE normally.  The difference is both my desktops are nvidia, but my netbook is intel 945GME Express.

As to the log files, my netbook /var/kdm.log points out that syslogd is where kdm stuff is logged.  The next thing to do is reboot my desktop with my livecd and see what that says. 

I'll report back, but it might be a while--wife has me traveling to visit her friends.

Putz, your comment on netbook booting success reminds me....
I once solved a booting problem by starting in non-graphics mode.
Maybe you tried this, but hit esc to exit the kdm graphic screen & see if it starts completely.
At the time it worked for me, so I edited my boot stanza of /boot/grub/menu.lst to splash=silent
It may not apply to your remaster problem but worth a mention.
btw, are you using dvd r/w?
