« on: September 15, 2010, 06:31:12 AM »
Hey guys/gals

I have a laptop (acer  5810t) that keeps freezing. This laptop is not even a year old. I wanna know what is the best free diagnostic tools that I can use to diagnose the entire system to find the problem.... it don't have its own built in tools like most dells. so far I've reinstalled vista and remove all the bloat-ware/crap software. I wanna test things like hard drive, Ram, drivers, display etc..

Thank  You all in advance

specs
Processor:  Intel core 2 solo 1.4Ghz,800 MHz FSB

MEM: 4GB

OS: windows vista 64bit

HD: 500GB

LCD: 15.6

I had a acer that died a few months ago. It had similar problems. It was heat related. The motherboard finally went out. It was only about a year and a half old. I wont ever buy another acer again.

Well, as for many hardware problems, first we have to look at the operating environment.
Now, this continual freezing problem.
Is the laptop:
a) in Alaska?
b) in Antarctica?
c) in your refrigerador?
d) turned on?

If a to c then we can probally help, otherwise suggest you use it to cool Pina Colada's
Report back soon.

I would recommend that you install PCLinuxOS on the laptop.  If everything goes well and the laptop stops having problems you know that the problem was Windows.  Problem solved.  If the machine continues to have problems, come back to us and we will see what else we can do to help.  ;)

i would suspect that since he said he reinstalled windows on it and he's posting on the PCL forum, this means that he probably had PCL on it.

Have a great morning!  :)

I also suggest using UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD)  as it has several tools for diagnosing every component in a computer. I use it at work to repair/diagnose problematic computers.

Cheers!

BTW amoeba,   UBCD you refer to has already been mentioned by grnich only 3 posts before....
Doesn't anyone actually read the posts on this forum?

with magic!!!

no, seriously, they mention the iso but is not anywhere to be found, you need to search for the torrent or someone sharing it on internet

ubcd linux version is not that useful on your case, ubcd for windows is better now

constant freezes on a laptop can come from a bad ram module, a error on the partition or the hard disk, overheating or a good hit the owner gave to the laptop and when it gets hot creates the situation

by any chance is a refurbished unit?

the hard disk, discover what brand is and then find the tool from the manufacturer to diagnose it, if it fails the diagnose, you have the reason, if it passes wipe the hard disk with dban and then create only one partition for windows, primary partition

the ram module, use memtest to see possible errors or if possible remove both modules and put another you know is working well

there is a temperature tool similar to cpuz in the same website that can show you those values, this could indicate that thermal paste is not working well(or never applied properly)or the heatsink/fan are not in good condition, probably dust

if all this steps fail and the laptop doesn't have warranty anymore start removing keyboard and have fun!!

or simply get another and avoid at all costs acer  ;D

about the tools to recover, ultrabootcd win has some of the tools i mentioned, the ultrabootcd linux has others including most of the tools to diagnose the hard disk and avoid the annoying creation of very small isos

another tool you can use is systemrescuecd
