*Solved* Can't remove old VBox install
« on: September 14, 2010, 11:38:28 PM »
When I run getvirtualbox, it ends with an error & exits. I am fully updated KDE4. This problem arose before the python related update.

Here's the error msg:

Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing VirtualBox for Linux installation.........
VirtualBox Version 3.2.8 r64453 (2010-08-05T11:57:18Z) installer

You appear to have a version of VirtualBox on your system which was installed
from a different source or using a different type of installer (or a damaged
installation of VirtualBox).  We strongly recommend that you remove it before
installing this version of VirtualBox.

Do you wish to continue anyway? [yes or no]

This error arose while doing a regular update with getvirtualbox. I then tried installing the OSE version & uninstalling thinking it would clean out whatever is stopping the puel install. I also deleted ./virtualbox. All no go.
I considered searching out all vbox* files & delete them, but I thought there'd be something to learn by doing it the right way, so here I am.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Things to try...

Remove all of the OSE versions with the package manager. Remove the getvirtualbox package from Synaptic. Check to make sure you do not have a /opt/VirtualBox folder or if so it is empty. Install getvirtualbox package from Synaptic. Run GetVirtualBox from the menu.

Do not delete your /home/your-name/.VirtualBox folder as that is where your VM's are stored!

Tex: I deleted my ./virtualbox cuz I didn't mind recreating my VM.
O-P:  ;D Yes, I did, but the dialog box didn't accept input.
I'll try your suggestions. Tx

Well, that did it. Thank you gentlemen, it seems the files in /opt/virtualbox were the culprits.

btw. is the getVB script meant to receive input? In my example I think I left off the line that said it was exiting.
There is line asking if you want to continue [Y,N] but no input is accepted, & the process is terminated. Possibly there is a delay that waits for user input but it timed out.

Anyway, Thanks for your attention!  ;D
