Dell D600 configuration issues
« on: September 13, 2010, 07:46:45 AM »
I installed the latest PCLOS without a hitch on my desktop, so I decided to give it a go on my aging Dell D600 laptop. I am running into a few issues. As first installed, then updated to all the latest, PCLOS was so slow on this laptop that it was almost unusable, especially with firefox. I figured that this had to be an issue with configuration, since this laptop has run other KDE 4 distros without a problem.

The first thing I did was to try these changes to X-org
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,78356.msg647259.html#msg647259

That worked OK, but then I noticed some really undesirable mouse behavior. specifically, I would have to hold the mouse over an icon or radio button for a very long time before clicking a mouse button would have any effect. I am using the onboard pointing stick. I tried loading the synaptics touchpad package from the repos, which worked to disable the touchpad (an annoyance solved!) and I ended up changing the mouse settings to disable the feature where the mouse cursor changes shape over an icon. that helped a lot, but didn't solve the problem.

Interestingly, if I plug in a plain old usb optical mouse, everything works perfectly. So the problem is limited to the onboard pointing stick and buttons. I am sure there are a few minor tweaks to configuration or the Xorg that will fix my issue, but I can't put my finger on them at the moment. What am I missing? Thanks.

How much memory is on this box?   I have a D610 with 1GB, and it runs just fine, without any mouse, display issues.  Did have to replace the DVD burner after it quit on me. The touchpad works fine and a USB mouse is fine, USBmouse is what I use all the time.
If it ain't broke, DON'T fix it!  If ya cain't fix it, ya gotta stand it.  If ya cain't stand it..............Visit the forum and search.

I have D630, everything out of the box (except sdcard reader), never had any problem...

Check out hardware manager from PCC, try to setup input devices there

its a 1.8Ghz, pentium M processor, 1 gb of memory. I think it is a problem with the way KDE or X is configuring the internal pointing device. It behaves perfectly fine if I plug in an external mouse. But the pointing stick is just about useless. It works fine in other distros, so I don't suspect a hardware failure.
