i don't like to eat partitions but if you want, i invite you to share with us the results of your gastronomic adventure :P

Forum support. O-P has different versions of PCLOS spread out on different partitions. He can boot into any of those environments and check out problems others are having.

Bingo! Give that man a cigar.  ;D

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like with a single installation, but that thought's just too scary. With all that empty space, I'd probably trip, fall into the puter, and be lost in the emptiness for all time. ;D ;D

i did that but with desktops, installing more than one on my single install, i don't have more than 3 now, don't have time to play with more than kde4 and sometimes e17, the rest is now unatended

i wish i had more time but between work, family and study i can't do more

now, going back to the original topic, it is less and less popular now to have many partitions

the most common thing is have a compatibility partition that can be read from xp so you can see files on both os, most people just copy personal files to a ntfs partition that is mounted or not depending each user requirements

Hehehe :D I don't use stuff like mustard or ketchup or any other sauces... It ruins the real taste of a good /dev/sdz1 or any other food to be exact ;)!

To stay on topic - /home is not compulsory but its a good thing to have imho Dudes.

something that hasn't been mentioned is that /home partition is usefull if the installation dies, pclinux is hard to kill, you need to do something wrong to kill it or have very bad luck doing a installation or creating new partitions

in the rare event of a total system crash, i can load livecd and copy all my /home folder files to another place and start from clean, in 6 years i haven't had to do this, never, that includes my old mandriva times!

there is two situations that are not that uncommon unfortunatelly, a accidental damage/deletion of the /home partition or the failure of the hard disk, on those situations it doesn't matter how you created partitions

this is why is so popular to have two hard disks, one for the os and another with your important files, many pclinux users have external hard disks with personal files, only connected when required

it looks like a extreme measure but is also the best measure to keep your personal files safe, one of the objectives to have a /home partition

Hello,

I think 2meg of ram, regular ram plus swap ram is good.  I work off of 1gb ram with
no swap.  2gb of ram would be extra good then.   Machines have 2-3-4 and even 5 meg
of ram but they must be doing graphics I don't do.   This theory of mine distorts most
recommendations.

One partition is also going to be used in the future here.  Easier to image or archive, install,
mount, and probably a few other things.  Not really concerned with performance, everything
is working fast enough.

cheers,

first things first, you say meg and gb as the same, we are talking about megabytes and gigabytes, you need 1 gb or 1 gigabyte of ram, 1 megabyte of ram is what my old cellphone had to load the os

you can work without a swap partition when you have lots of ram(more than 2 gbs of ram) but if you have a laptop and you do suspend to ram or suspend to hd you will have problems, swap is required when you run out of ram.

if you try to edit a big image in gimp(over 20 mbs, try with a 400 mbs image, let me know and i will post a link for a image like this  ;D ) or if you open big office files swap can be used depending on how much ram you have, as said before it is better to have it and not to use it..

what is advised is not to have more than one partition and at the proper size to avoid wasting hard disk space, something that in the past shouldn't be done by cost/space on hard disks

a old practice was to have two hard disks, one for / and /home and another for only swap to make system run faster but todays amount of ram available and speeds of cpu/hard disk makes this measures not useful anymore

Unless you still live in the '80s you probably mean gigabytes or gibibytes when you talk about megs. Taking that into consideration your observations are correct -- if you ignore the circumstances when they aren't. O-P has explained the whole thing in a couple of threads, for instance here:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,69893.msg573010.html#msg573010

and here:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,69910.msg573094.html#msg573094

That said, I have eight gigabytes of RAM on my desktop box and I've never seen or heard any swapping.

Edit: T6 was faster as usual.

not only that, i wrote a more longer and complete answer  ::)   ;D

with eight gbs of ram, you will hardly will make use of five :P

you need at least 5 xp/vista/win7 machines in virtualbox to reach this usage and then use swap

i forgot this very relevant post made by old pollack

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,69910.0.html

adding to that, video edition of some files is more likely to use lots of cpu and not much ram/swap

I know, and that pleases me immensely. O-P's arguments are still valid though.
