[SOLVED] No touchpad options in KDE 4.5.1
« on: September 06, 2010, 08:45:24 AM »
I can't find touchpad settings in KDE settings manager, it shows my mouse settings but no touchpad. I didn't try this in KDE 4.4 after installing PCLOS 2010.7, just did upgrade straight away. However, in Mandriva 2010.1 (KDE 4.4.3) it was there and worked. I want to turn my touchpad off, it's really annoying when typing and I nudge the cursor position by accident.

Qsynaptics is not in the repository anymore.   It apparently has been replaced by gpointing-device-settings which works one time but does not survive a reboot of KDE.  On my system after a reboot gpointing-device-settings gui shows touchpad disabled but it is actually not.  I have to turn touchpad back on then rerun it to turn it off again.  Why don't they put Qsynaptics back in the repository?  It worked!!

Let me get this right, we need a package called qsynaptics in order for the KDE settings manager to interact with the touchpadd. I'm not interested ina seperate control app, I want to one in Mouse/Input devices  section of KDE settings. If that's so, then I agree, why is it not in the repo anyone, in fact why is it not installed by default. It worked well in my Mandriva 2010.1 installation on same laptop.

There are 2 packages you can try, but both are half-baked.

kcm_touchpad
synaptiks

Both will come up in Synaptic (Package Manager) on a search for "touchpad".

There are also some other threads on our forums mentioning these issues.  Here is one:

Synaptics works for my HP laptop. The configuration is now under: Configure your desktop, System Administration, Lost and Found, Touchpad. jd

GREAT!!!  This is the one, but why in the world did they put the configuration for it in System Administration, Lost and Found, Touchpad??? That doesn't make any sense at all unless I'm missing something.  LOST AND FOUND??

If you keep up with kde4 development news, they rearranged the settings panel and anythings that aren't yet a full-fledged part of "mainstream" kde project get thrown into lost and found.  GTK themes gets thrown in there too.  (It is a module to make gtk apps look more natural in the kde environment.)

Thanks jakesdad, I installed synaptiks, that did the trick. I totally understand it being Lost & Found for the time being. What I don't understand is why synaptiks isn't installed by default. I is actually a big improvement over what I had in Mandriva, the "Automatic touchpad control" is great, it switches off my touchpad when a mouse is plugged in, and switches on again when unplugged. Fantastic, now I don't have to hunt for my mouse on the odd occasion I don't have it plugged in.

So does anyone know how to get synaptiks to work...???  Keeps claiming device isn't present or some crud like that...

Synaptiks is not working for me either.  The pop up message I get is "Synaptic Gestures not available" what ever that means.  It would be nice to be able to disable the touchpad when I have my wireless mouse attached.

Thanks for any help you may be able to offer.

Try installing gsynaptics, it doesn't seem to link to the launcher menu but you can run it from command  line: #gsynaptics . It's not ideal as as doesn't persist over a reboot but it may help determine whether it's a synaptiks / KDE issue or a kernel/module issue. Can you see anything relevant in lspci / lsmod?

I'll give gsnyaptics a try.  Here is what I got when I entered Ispci & Ismod:  (not sure what any of it means)

'lspci' displays a list of PCI devices (sound cards, video cards, anything on the PCI bus). 'lsmod' displays the kernel modules (drivers) and 'lsusb' displays the detected usb devices (includes the hubs/ports themselves). I've just looked at my lspci and lsusb and I can't identify my touchpad. Perhaps 'lshw' (list hardware) would be more appropriate. Install lshw-gui from Synaptic package manager, in terminal, type 'su' and give it the administrator password, then type gtk-lshw. This will give you a gui browser of the detected hardware, it's a bit tricky to browse at times, juct click on everything, until it expands. Hopefully you can find the device, this will give you some hope as to get it working. Anyway these are just tips fro linux hardware issues.

I would recommend trying gsynaptics first, does it detect a touchpad? Do you have a "Touchpadd" entry in System Settings -> Lost and Found?

I removed synaptiks and installed gsynaptics.  Gsynaptics works fine, however as mentioned before I need to run it from a terminal after each restart.  I will give your suggestions a try to see what I find and what level of control I can get.

Thanks for the ideas/info.

If gsynaptics works fine then the hardware is detected and modules (drivers) are working. Are you sure synaptiks isn't working? Mine is working great, but I do get a popup message when logging in, I didn't notice what is says exactly, it's goes away too fast. I think gestures is mentioned in the message though, but it works as expected.

Do you have a "Touchpad Settings and Management" from Lost & Found section of System Settings? Mine has four sections on the left panel "Touchpad configuration", "Automatic touchpad control"  "Notifications" and "Touchpad information".

At what point do you get "Synaptic Gestures not available" message? When logging in, or when you access the Touchpad settings in System Settings control panel?

Try to leave gsynaptics installed and re-install synaptiks, then give us some more information (above).
