[SOLVED] usb & VB 3.2.8

I hadn't used any usb devices in VB lately.  But now I need to access my Dell Axim.  It was working but now with the latest VB, all of my usb devices are greyed out.  Do we need to use the previous fix that was in fstab?  I find that I have that entry but it is commented out.  So it must have worked without it before.  I on 2010 with all upgrades.

You know about the need to mount the USB devices under "Devices" in VB, probably forgot that?

That seems to be the problem.  I can mount the usb device in my settings, but when I start the vm all of the devices are greyed out and nothing is mounted.  I seem to remember that we had this problem before but can't remember the fix.  Anyone else see this?  Has something changed since 3.2.6?

Did you use the GetVirtualbox install from the repo? (you have to install that and then run the app/script which downloads and installs Virtualbox directly - this install then has the usb capabilities)

Well, do you run the latest version WITH the new Vbox-additions installed (For some reason I can't remember right now the full name of these additions and I am not at the richt box ...). But since you're not all new to VB you might know what I mean here. I think it is rather important to have the latest installed.

Otherwise you might try to have VB re-installed using GetVirtualBox (Yeah Oracle, I know!). It might be borked or what ....

Yes I used GetVirtualBox.  I used it for 3.2.6 and again for 3.2.8.  I had no problem using usb devices in 3.2.6, so something has changed.

Yes I'm running the latest with the proper guest additions.  So something else is going on here.

Okay - that's odd then 

If you haven't already done so, you could try  removing any vbox folders etc and then try re-installing it again.

I'm guessing you've rebooted after any updates?

I find that when I hover over the list of device filters to add, it lists them as being "unavailable".  Has something changed inf KDE 4.5.1 that grabs all of the usb devices and needs to be told to let go?  If so how would I go about doing that?

PCC (Configure Your Computer) >> System >> Manage Users on System

to see whether your vboxuser (and possibly usb) are enabled in the Groups ?

That may help.

Its a bit weird that you are running the same version as most of us and your USB isn't functioning as it should......   You have rebooted to allow VBox to be set correctly?

Yes I've checked all that multiple times.  That's why I can't figure this out.  I tried by removing my user from vboxusers group to see if that would change anything.  So I rebooted without it set and guess what?  VirtualBox worked for me just the same as before.  What's going on there.  I did set it back, I thought that by doing so would get it to work.  But so far nothing changes.  VirtualBox works great, just no usb.  Are you using KDE 4.5.1?  I've also tried re-installing Virtual Box, not difference.  I tried a new user, Virtual Box is the same there also.  So it's either some setting in PCLOS or Virtual Box.

PS.  When I rebooted I noticed 3 entries marked "Failed", which all looked labeled as Virtual something or other.  It moved too fast for me to read.  Any idea where those would be logged?  Perhaps they will give us a clue as to what is going on.

Interesting development:  While searching the Virtual Box forum, I noticed a post referring to the kernel that a distro was using.

I took that clue and rebooted my computer to the original kernel. I had been using the .pae kernel so that all of my 4 gig's of ram would be available. I found that in the process the Virtual Box module had to be compiled for this older kernel.

After bootup I find that now my usb devices are not greyed out.  Could it be that the install process for VB did not properly compile the module?  Or is there a problem with the .pae kernel?
