Re: PCLinuxOS Openbox Mini - who wants to test ?
« Reply #135 on: September 12, 2010, 10:26:37 AM »

When I move my mouse over the network applet in the panel, it shows the DNS as "8.8.8.8" and I have it set to use opendns servers, not the "8.8.8.8" as shown.  I checked and I have the dns servers entered correctly in the network configuration, but it is not working.  Opendns says that I am not using their servers.

I can confirm this, for some reason it's defaulting to the GoogleDNS server 8.8.8.8 and I'm unable to change that to the OpenDNS server.

Hi,

You can go to /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/base and change it there. Yet I could not find out how to get the DNS not to be erased after each reboot : dhcp seems not to be able to give back a configuration made with drakconnect boot after boot (the network part in PCC).

By using the Google DNS at least all have an internet connection that functions once the live is started, or once installed.

One last thing.  I did find that PCMan still has the view as detailed list folder problem.

Figure out ! Same in my full install that I use everyday since several weeks, and I never noticed ! I never try to browse folders this way. In fact I mostly use console for this purpose...

Well, other choices are possible of course, emelfm... tuxcommander, xfe... and if you also want icons on the desktop you can try idesk : I don't know how to configure it thought and I don't have available time to digg that, but if someone wants to give it a try and contribute with some all made configuration files he would be welcome, and the configs would be published somewhere for all to find them.

or in PCLinuxOS 2010, you can turn off the resolvconf service, reboot, and then enter your DNS settings, reboot again and they should hold.  Actually, I set mine to automatic and rebooted.  However, from what I just read, I think I'll change to OpenDNS.

Jeff

Edit:  Just changed to OpenDNS and it held on reboot.  Not only that, the web pages seem to load faster! ;D

Hi Melodie,

Sorry to join this testing a little late, but work had me busy yesterday.

Always welcome, never too late. :D

I have done a physical install of RC1 and am currently running it.  I have found a few minor things that you will want to fix, if possible.  They are:

1.  The keyboard layout is not correct at a console boot.  Once OB is loaded at the login screen, it is fine.  But at the console prompt the "a" key is a "q" and the "q" is an "a".  I have seen this on all of your ob mini releases.  I am not sure about the other PCLOS releases.

First what is your keyboard ? Second, in what console ? Virtual console, or Sakura, the default X console ? If in X, set it with "setxkbmap us" if your keyboard is us. If in Virtual console (=tty) fix it as root with "loadkeys us" if us keyboard.

I have a azerty keyboard and I didn't switch back to us before remastering... /o\

Quote
2.  The link on the default index.html file is incorrect.  By the way, I like that default page.  It shows the link to PCLOS Help (bottom left) as http:wwww.pclinuxos.com .  One too many w's there.

Would someone update the old howto ? I could put it in /usr/share/doc/HTML, and point there in Midori ? Old doc:
http://melodie.tyruiop.org/DocuPCLinuxOS/Documentation/aide-integree/aide_installation/en/help.html

and first steps:
http://melodie.tyruiop.org/DocuPCLinuxOS/Documentation/aide-integree/premiers-pas/en/firststeps.html

If someone is interested, they can get a template to make it look like this:
http://melodie.tyruiop.org/DocuPCLinuxOS/Documentation/aide-integree/premiers-pas/fr/firststeps-fr.html

Template here: http://melodie.tyruiop.org/template-docs.html.txt

I also wrote a "Before install" but this is in french only for now:
http://melodie.tyruiop.org/DocuPCLinuxOS/Documentation/aide-integree/Avant-installation.html

I put it in the base file because DNS were not saved from one boot to the other. If someone finds the right fix for it, it will be VERY welcome. Go to /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/base and change it there, or try to erase it and reconfigure, then reboot to see if you still have the connection ?

I am off to check the sound and will report more later on.  These are the issues that I found upon my initial physical install.

Ok, that's permissions, and I don't know how to do so that the next first user created gets by default in the audio group. I'd need some help, more advanced people to explain that to me.

It looks good Melodie  ;D

Thank you.

After installing and trying to run gmixer, it will not start and in a terminal I get this error message:
Quote
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/gmixer", line 37, in <module>
    import gtk.glade
ImportError: No module named glade

I get several error messages when running gnome alsa-mixer but it does work.
[/quote]

This should be reported to Gnome people I think ?! Would you go to their chan once if you have a few minutes available, and point to this one post of your's to ask what they think ?

Otherwise what about using volumeicon ? It's very light, and needs nothing else than xterm (no need for glade modules that's for sure ). You may like it ! You can uncomment a line that it meant for it in autostart.sh, to start it with the X session.

You just tought me something I was perfectly ignorant about ! Any idea how that is ? How did you discover it ?

I'll try that right away !!!

Just one question : do you think there is anything special I do so that it's ok for all, from live to install ? I don't want the people to get "my" DNS either ! that would be 192.168.1.1 and this can't fit anybody...
Or should I turn off resolvconf before remastering ? What would be the best idea ?

From what I'd read, in this Forum and elsewhere, I knew it has something to do with reslovconf.  Somewhere, I saw a comment on how reslovconf was no longer needed.  In view of this, I decided to turn off reslovconf and give it a try.

I'm not an expert here, however, I tested both the automatic DNS setup and setting DNS manually.  They both hold during reboot.  Note that I also checked the /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/base file and it still shows 8.8.8.8, while I'm currently using 208.67.222.222. I don't think that your DNS setting of 192.168.1.1 would show up anywhere. Personally, I'd turn off roslvconf before remastering, as it appears that it's no longer needed and it can be turned back on if need be.

Jeff

Edit:  I've also turned off resolvconf on my main laptop, just to see if there are any ill effects.  I'm currently running KDE 4.51 on that.

It is the console at boot.  On one machine, I have to select the "Console" option on the livecd grub screen.  Then I login as user, su to root, and select XFdrake to set the video options.  On this one system it wants to default to a dpi display of 1440x1050 and the monitor gets "messed up".  I select 1440x900 and it works fine.  Then I select startx and am good to go for the install.

As for the mixer and volume icon thing, I will work on that later on.  My wife is using her computer now and that is where I did the physical install.  I only needed the gmixer program to toggle a point concerning "digital audio" only.  Once this is done, it is all set.  I have not seen how to toggle this setting with any kde alsa utility, yet.

grosbedos, thanks for the tip.  I will try it out when I can for the reason mentioned above.

What if that's ok to go without it : maybe could I even think of removing purely the package ?
For the file base that's normal, it's meant for that. Comment out theses lines or just erase the content of this file completely : at the origin it was empty.

I think you have just to install pygtk2-libglade

Nice ! With a list coming from "apt-cache search libglade" I didn't guess which one package could be *the* one. :)

For information:

I added man, man-pages, and removed nss and libnss3 (without any damage). The installed size is stable at 935 MB vs 938 MB before I remastered the RC1. All the Synaptic logs are still in there ! So if interested you can review the packages installed (and some removed) since the beginning.

At this point, all is running fine, with not any ill effects.  As for removing the package, it's 69.5 kB in size.  I don't think I'd remove it, just in case it's needed for something.  However, that's your call.

Sure, <70kb does not make a difference in the final iso size. You are perfectly right.

Am I right ? Is your keyboad a US layout ?

As for login in console, you can login as root directly to do administrative tasks, no need to login as user first. Then you can choose either to logout, login as user, do a startx from there - which I think would be wiser... but I don't have experiment in login to X as root, as I have been warned in hot red not to do so, from the beginning.

Please take note that the startx command is produced with the file ~/.xsession. I had to rename it from .xinitrc because the actual GDM we have don't see .xinitrc files. I have put a copy of this file in /root, and in /etc/skel as well, of course.
