dual monitors in Zen-mini? (SOLVED)
« on: January 22, 2011, 08:51:11 PM »
I am running a pentium 4 with 1.2Gig ram, and e-Gforce 8800 video card with the nvidea 6100 or newer driver.  This setup works okay as a single screen system.  The card has two outputs for a dual monitor system and I am trying to figure out how to set up Zen-mini to run that type of setup.  So far, all I can manage to do is have the two monitors mirror each other - even when I uncheck the option for mirroring.  I have tried downloading all of the nvidea drivers in the repository to see if that would change things, but I just can't seem to have one screen on one monitor and a second desktop onthe other.  Any suggestions of what I can do to fix this situation?

what do you mean one destkop on one monitor and second destkop on second ?

To configure nvidia output open nvidia xserver setting from menu -> x server display configuration -> configure -> here select what type of viewing you want... I'm not sure if you looking for that (I'm using it with my projector to watch movies... :D)

remember to reset X before checking :P

Hi Harnadem,

I didn't see any mention of whether or not you have installed the proprietary Nvidia drivers, if not, you will need to do this to enable the Twinview option and others. This message and thread has some info and a couple of screenshots of the Nvidia GUI and such:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,84491.msg701172.html#msg701172

In Synaptic, look for "X11-driver-video-nvidia-current" and "dkms-nvidia-current (260.19.29-1)", and install those, then open the PCC to configure it's usage, then open the Nvidia settings GUI and set up your screens.

Good luck!

I appreciate the help.  I do have the proprietary NVIDIA drivers installed, and have installed "X11-driver-video-nvidia-current" and "dkms-nvidia-current (260.19.29-1)"  I am able to start "enable RENDER acceleration" and "enable duplicate display on second display" within PCC.  Using the NVIDIA settings (from NVIDIA dock) I can enable "twin view" and see the same output in both monitors.

What I am trying to do (and am not sure if I can) is to have Workspace1 appear on my Dell monitor, while Workspace2 appears on my HP monitor.  I am editing a paper and am trying to avoid having to flip back and forth between two open documents, and would like to see both at the same time.

Maybe it isn't possible, but I thought that I would try.  Is there any other information that I can offer that would help someone assist me in figuring this out?

Amigo, I do this every day on two different computers both with dual monitors using the exact methodology I described :D, you really don't need the "workspaces" or the switcher if you have two monitors, just drag the second document to the second monitor. You can open up an instance of your home file on one monitor and another on the second one. I can run graphics programs fullscreen on one monitor and undock all the tool palettes and put them on the second monitor, watch video on one and write documents on the other simultaneously, not sure what further functionality you are needing beyond that.

If you are seeing your taskbar, desktop icons etc. on the second monitor as well, then you need to make some adjustments in the Nvidia GUI, make sure you set which screen is the primary X screen, make sure you save your settings before quitting the Nvidia settings manager.

Success!  Dual monitors now work on my system.  I am not entirely sure what tweak worked in the NVIDIA settings, but obviously something did.  Instead of seeing the exact same output on both monitors, I am able to drag a window across to the second one.

Thank you for all of your help!
