Thanks anyway, uncleV. I should go to bed anyway; I'm just another American with poor sleeping habits, and I've gotta be up in 3 hours   ;D ;D ::)
If it was me (poor English) I would have said "poor bed habits".

Just imagine... ;D

Okay, this is proving more difficult than I expected.  :-X

Commenting out that line, as Neal so helpfully suggested, only disables pcmanfm's management of the wallpaper. It still manages the desktop icons, therefore it still runs at startup.

What I wanted to do is disable pcmanfm from running at all, and to have the computer start xfdesktop in its place, using THAT to manage both the wallpaper AND the icons.

My original intent was to get this set up the way I wanted and then to UNINSTALL pcmanfm, but I didn't realize until recently that lxde-common and lxsession-lite would get uninstalled as well. one of those two contains the logout program/function, so uninstalling pcmanfm would hurt more than help (as I don't know how to build/compile my own).   :-[

Also, I've found through experimenting on my own just today that it's very easy to start with openbox and use an autostart script to start xfdesktop and my beloved lxpanel.   :D

Because of this, I think my dilemma is mostly solved, but the logout program won't work unless pcmanfm is running, so would someone be able to point me in the right direction for building my own graphical logout program, or would anyone know of one already made that doesn't require me to install many extras? It’s got to include at least these three buttons: Shutdown, Reboot, and Logout.

Thanks for your time so far, folks. And sorry for such a long post this time!  :P

NotBob,
Have you checked out Melodie's openbox mini project at mypclinuxos.com? Or the education project? I believe you'll find some answers there.

Thanks Neal. No I have not really checked out Melodie's openbox mini project yet. I have the link, but it's been a busy day and I haven't had time to download it.

I hadn't heard of this education project you speak of, so I did a quick search. Are you talking about the remaster they call eduLOS? http://mypclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?topic=353.0

Also, last I knew, Melodie's openbox mini was having problems with the logout program? What I gathered was that the logout program worked fine in the full version but not in the mini? I read this post: http://mypclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?topic=2798.msg25174#msg25174

EDIT: I just read the new posts on that thread and apparently it's fixed now? Don't know if a fixed iso is available though...

EDIT AGAIN: Oh, never mind, it looks as though there's a new iso as of this post: http://mypclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?topic=2799.msg25182;topicseen#msg25182  ... I should really learn to read more before asking stupid questions   ;D ;D ;D

Hi!
It seems to me you are trying to create a new desktop environment for PCLOS?
 ;)

uncleV,

Sort of, yes. I wanted to use parts from LXDE and XFCE to create a new custom environment.   ;D

The education project I was talking about is here --

The latest news on the openbox mini is here --

Creating a custom DE for your use can be done, but it requires some knowledge of the inner workings of things. I recommend that your look through the system. Check out /etc and /usr/share. Yes, that covers a lot, but it is worth your time.

Alright, thank you Neal. I intend to extend this to more than personal use and make it into a custom live cd once I've got it all sorted out, but that'll take time. I've only been using linux for about 3 years, though I'm familiar with the cli, everything-as-a-file concept, and the directory structure of linux (I was a slack geek for almost a year).   :P

I'll let ya know when I've got more done. I've never tried this hard to make a custom DE project.   ;D

This is a great thread!

Remember Neal when we were trying to get a wallpaper slideshow going and Wally would work well - just the wallpapers weren't showing?

Look in /home/<you>/.config/pcmanfm/ for the file main.lxde. Open it with leafpad and comment out the line
Code: [Select]
show_wallpaper=1

It will appear as -

Code: [Select]
#show_wallpaper=1

might just loosing the grip on my wallpapers and allow Wally to come in.  Can't wait to test it tonight....

...and with this back to the studio ...  :-X

The lighter stuff like Phoenix, LXDE and now Openbox giving me loads of fun.
Indeed - it is a great pleasure and privilege to see LXDE developing right now.  You guys are rocking. Leap by leap ...  :D

I'll keep you posted on that wallpaper slideshow issue.

Pity - just gives me a black screen and still doesn't work.  Ai - I was really hopeful ...
