[Solved] KDE is confused with files.
« on: September 01, 2010, 11:40:14 PM »
Anyone else having JPEG problems after the 4.5.1 update?
(Also my trashcan is now a text file.  wha?)

SO far I have reinstalled the KDE gwenview package, no dice.

"Gwenview cannot display documents of this type application/x-kdeuser1"

In Dolphin trying to open a Jpeg with Gwenview.

GIMP can open these very same files.
It seems like KDE forgot what to do with certain files. I don't mind going back and reteaching KDE the others.
But I don't know what to do with the jpeg issue. Since they don't even preview in Dolphin.

Anyone wanna throw out some crazy ideas, feel free.   :)

Created a new user (just in case I borked something), and still KDE is playing dumb.
Plus I get this error on login.

Do I need to sweet talk KLauncher more, or show it tough love?

Did you reboot since last updates?
If not try that.

Yes, I have rebooted with a vengeance. The mouse clicks were snappy on not subtle.   :)

Just noob ideas for diagnostics:

- Remove the .jpg extention in the filename and try to open the file in gwenview.
- Run gwenview from Terminal and look for output.

I would start with re-install kde4-config. Reboot and see what happens. What I see at your Desktop is as good as alien to me  ;D  So, a reset to the basics (standard Desktop) seems a logical first step to me.

As far as my second post about the weird errors.
I did what this scoundrel said, and now I don't get that error when logging in anymore.

Jpeg and whatnot, still borked. Feel like I made a good step, though.

Uncle, I took the jpg off like a prom dress and still nothing.
Gwenview by command line gave me suspect stuffs.

[k2@localhost Desktop]$ gwenview wallpaper-7*

gwenview(8731)/kdecore (services) KMimeTypeFactory::parseMagic: Now parsing  "/home/k2/.local/share/mime/magic"

Then gwenview popped up and said exnay once more.

Gonna mess around some more....

Being at your place I'd search the forum on soprano or nepomuk or DBus Error or any combination.

Haha, Bicol that just brought all my cool setup, back to the basics.     :(
But now I know what that does.   :)

Still, for some reason KDE is acting like file types mean nothing, and just tries to open everything unknown in Kwrite.

What about reinstalling Dolphin and Konqueror too?
(the next being reinstalling PCLOS itself  ;D)

Hmm, can't you correct that in CYD  (Configure Your Desktop) > Common appearance etc.. > File associations ?

I just throw something at you:

Did you try to re-install the unwilling program(s)?

Try to run in a konsole apt-get check to look if any errors pop up.

Yea, uncle might be right. I might need to dust off a cd. I thank you for your help, but I think something went a little wrong with the upgrade. (And yes, I tried to reinstall all things mentioned)

I don't like giving up, but sometimes things happen. Anything too deep in the system and I am at a loss.
Due to my user level I think I am just going to backup and give a fresh install a try.

Thank you kind sirs for the tips. I will be back...   :)

Yes and if you re-install, you can leave intact your /home partition   (For safety you might rename you userfolder running the live cd and after new install rename it again the same way. I have seen people overwriting their home (user) folder. Not that nice if you got "precious" files)
