Thanks, muung. I'll be sure to try that later, and post results.  I have to work on my honey-do list, now.

Thanks again, all.

It is noticeable that both the applications you mentioned have the facility for you to tell them to remember the password.

I would suggest a reboot to see if the behaviour is retained.

regards.

I did as you suggested.  When I boot up, I get "Cannot enter home directory.  Using /."  Clicked "Okay," then got "Kstartupconfig4 does not exist or fails.  The error code is 3.  check."  Clicked "OK," then got "The session was locked by bill."

This is a fresh install with all recent updates.  Since I am the only one who uses this machine, I am not too concerned about this issue, but thanks for all of your help.

I have been using the forums to solve all of my newbie problems for more than two years now, and this is my first post, so that tells you how great this site is.

I don't know what impact this may have had, but I used "apt-get update," and "apt-get upgrade," before reading Texstar's October post telling us not to do so.  Ooops! :(

Your problem is unique, your medhod of update could be the cause of the problem. I will recommend you reinstall and update properly. Failure to do so could pose serious problems in the future at a times when its very difficult to reinstall.

YOu dont have to do it now, just have it in your todo list somewhere.

That sounds like a plan, muung.  A 23 minute install, and a couple of days of tweaking could save headaches down the road.

Thanks again.

Make sure the ownership of your home directory is correct, also...that could be the cause of the error...

I don't know how to do that, pags, but I did as muung suggested, and all is now fine.  I strongly suspect using "apt-get update," and "apt-get upgrade" messed things up somehow.  Problem solved, kinda.   ;)

We recommend using synaptic, but if you must use apt-get the command is apt-get dist-upgrade. The one you used only upgrades packages to their latest versions but doesn't install new dependencies, so when Tex re-organises the packages you don't get everything and eventually something will fail.

Something wrong with permissions in your Home directory?

then got "The session was locked by bill."
That's Texstar... He saw you are doing bad with apt-get using and locked you.
