(Resolved) Chromium on LXDE ??

when I use chromium on my LXDE and click on a magnet link it opens up FF and then Transmission ??  have tried to remove FF but it wants to remove task-lxde ?? is there a way to get Chromium to work on its own ?

having the same problem on my kde install, but there it defaults to konq instead of dolphin

I recently read a remark from Texstar (I think) saying that removing task-*de won't ruin your system because it works only for installing and configuring the newly picked DE.

But I'm not sure all the 100%.

Firefox is one of the "Requires" (i.e. dependencies) for task-lxde. Removing it should cause no problems, as task-lxde is only a spec file with a list of apps that it tells Synaptic to install for LXDE.

You can remove firefox and task-lxde without harm yes.
Programs that use xdg-open will still tray to open links in firefox: the change the browser xdg-open usens take a look here

thanks guys ....... but now it will not open a magnet link or a torrent with transmission ...what it does now with a torrent file ..is download it to my download folder.. magnet it does nothing..

Chromium uses the default application provided by the desktop, when using gnome it will use gnome-open, when kde it will use kfmclient and exo-open for xfce. If no known desktop found it probably uses xdg-open. On debian you can use update-alternatives in this case but that doesn't work the same way on other distros.
I've been looking for a solution for a couple of weeks now but still haven't found any, there are some extensions for chrome that allow to open a torrent in a remote tranmission webinterface, maybe you could use that as workaround till google's coders have completed the open with features in Chromium. Hence the greyed-put 'Clear auto-opening settings' in chromium's setup screen.

k.... will take a look... tried to change checkgmail to chromium%u and no go on that one..

The command to start chromium is chromium-browser, the executable chromium is used for a game called chromium.
But you can better edit  the xdg-open script as i described then point all apps to xdg-open, if you want to change your default browser again afterwards you only have to edti the script again instead of setting up all your apps again.

yup..figured that one .. though for checkgmail the %u is not doing it ......... did change the xdg-open script

Like you, I use checkgmail and prefer to use the Chromium browser because it's faster and doesn't have the "freezes" that I've experienced with Firefox since version 3.2, where Firefox just freezes my computer for up to a full minute (related to pages running scripts, I believe).

Sorry to get sidetracked ... under checkgmail, enter your browser command line as "chromium-browser %u" to open Chromium with the Gmail login page displayed. For some reason, Chromium will not accept the login password that was entered into checkgmail, and forces you to re-supply your account password before displaying your email. I guess you could look at this as an added layer of security for your email account. I personally don't find it all that much of an inconvenience to have to re-enter my account password. Note that you have to have the space before the %u in the command line.

thanks Paul ..that did the trick...... was missing the space..  have you gotten skype to open links with chromium ?? or tried to use chromium to open torrents with transmission ?? magnet links ??

I can't answer about Skype or torrents. I don't do Skype (no need, since my voip has unlimited domestic long distance) and I rarely do anything with torrents. Sorry I can't help much with that aspect.
