E17 AFTER updates
« on: August 29, 2010, 03:27:34 PM »
I installed E17 today, and it looked really cool. Then I installed all updates and the following things have changed.

1) lbar used to go horizontal and looked really neat. Now it's just some icons on the bar at the bottom of the screen.

2) Can't download themes or wallpapers online even though there is that option. I get a listt of things but the window appears to be frozen. Can't scroll to see any others and attempts to download are futile.

any ideas?

Have you rebooted yet? By Ibar, do you mean itask bar? I'm running e17, fully updated from 2010.1 installation. No problems here. I'm not sure, but I believe what you're seeing is the (unavoidable) initial desktop reset as a result of some of the updates. It's inconvenient, but not difficult to get the desktop re-arranged.

Ok rebooted (twice) no change.

ibar was the 3rd button over on the task bar when I first installed E17. There was the "start" button, next to it was a "show desktop" type button and next to that was a button that when clicked originally showed a list with "Control center" and "firefox" in it. Now only the start button is there and there are icons for apps listed in favorite applications.

still can't get the Exchange Themes to download or their wallpapers.

You probably need to load the ibar module again. "Show desktop" module to be loaded is Deskshow. I think the one showing your favorites is iBox. To find out what's already there, right-click the start button and select shelf1 > Set Shelf Contents.

As far as the themes, see if the Settings - Theme module is loaded.

So far as Exchange themes go... they are gone. I did a full re-install then all updates. I noticed that the Exchange themes were pulled and the ones I now have were put in. the exchange themes are not listed via synaptic anymore.

I can see the exchange themes like you have pictured but cant download or in stall anything

will check the other stuff in a bit. thanks for your help.

lbar situation still the same

I just realized that the menu structure is also different after updates. "Favorite Apps" wasn't there before

My bad on the Exchange themes. I hadn't tried downloading any, as I just use August's themes from the repository.

Is the ibar module loaded? Is it also listed as a component in shelf1? I didn't have the module loaded, so I loaded it and added it to shelf1. It showed up on the right-hand side as a blank space. If I right-click it and select Settings, I get the IBar Settings window. Clicking on the Setup button, I get an IBar Applications window, with a list of installed Applications to add to it.

Nope. Never tried on e17. It's my main box, and I try not to do anything too outlandish and bork it. As Texstar says, e17 is under heavy development. I may take a few chances, but not too many.

Thanks again. Guess I'll play it safe for now. While it's been a really confusing first day with E17, think I'll be staying with it

Although it's still listed as beta, after being alpha for many years, I've had few problems with it on PCLinux. I've tried it on other distros, with varying degrees of success. PCLinux is very stable. It helps to have a stable base. I wouldn't swear to it, but I believe I've had fewer problems than if I had been using KDE4. YMMV.

Instead of ibar and itask there's a new Mac-ish looking launcher taskbar in e17 called itask-ng, looks nice and works nice and well integrated with the desktop.
To use it enable it in the modules and find the setup in the Settings Panel tab 'extensions'
This is how it looks, the icons zoom on mouse over:

I dont think you can use anything from gnome-look.org. Go instead to e17-stuff.org for e17 themes and wallpapers and a lot of other stuff for e17.

If you're using gtk apps you can use gtk-chtheme to change the gtk theme. You can also use other icons from gnome-look or kde-look.
For e17 themes there's the package in synaptic with Agust's themes and you can find more on http://exchange.enlightenment.org/ and e17-stuff.org
