need help configuring my graphics on MSI L2100
« on: August 25, 2010, 11:39:05 PM »
this is my first post here. I just started it out with linux today, just installed Pclinux on my MSI L2100 netbook, it's using by default the graphical server ''Radeon x1950 and earlier''. However, it doesn't seem to work.  Everytime i play a movie or move any window with the cursor it starts too lagg really bad. Should I change to a different type of graphical server, or is there a specific package i need to install? The graphic card that i have is a radeon x1250.

hello and welcome to the forum

the x1000 series of video cards form ati are a very well known problem since...  well forever!

you are using the right driver, the graphical server, in pclinux we only use xorg, xfree86 is not used here because it doesn't support many of the most used apps and 3d properly

have you updated your system?  open synaptic, press reload button and apply all the updates available, could be many(200+ mbs)

also, are you using the latest kernel available or using the original one that came with the installation?

there is others in synaptic, you can install more to see if newer versions improver performance

about the apps you use to play videos, at what resolutions and what apps are used?

hi T6, thanks for replying. Well i have done all updates, i'm guessing i have the kernel that came with the installation cause i don't think i have made

any changes, i don't really know how to lol.  Could that be why is running slow? if so, how do i find out what kernel i have & how update to the latest

one?  and well about the apps, it isn't just the apps, is pretty much everything let's say i watch a 480p video on youtube, the video plays all choppy, it

it laggs really bad even when is at 360p. My resolution is at 1366x768 24bpp, i got the accelatared graphics checked & the other options as well.  I

appreciate you from taking the time to answer my noobish questions. :)

it is very very easy, on synaptic press search button, write kernel, in the list of found packages scroll down until you see the kernels available, we currently have 2.6.33.7

select that one and install it, it will be added to the boot list so all you need to do is select it, don't remove the one you have now, just leave it there, the first time you boot from it it will take some time while it adds some modules but this is only the first time

after that open pclinux control center/hardware/setup the graphical server/graphics card and reselect and confirm again your video card selection to reboot

again select the new kernel on the boot menu and see how it performs, if it improves something, i will tell you later how to use always this new kernel by default

ok i have downloaded the 2.6.33.7 kernel, i set my graphics the same way they were. I did not see any improvements on the graphics, everything is still pretty slow.

@menotu yea i did reboot after updating and still performed the same. :(

KDE?

If so:

  • disable Kwin effects/Compiz-fusion
  • system settings/workspace/workspace type/which one do you use? dekstop or netbook?
  • system settings/application appearance/style/fine tunning/and play with the settings

Next time please post hardware specs [I hope this is ok]:
