XFCE latest release, update required 300Mb/446 files!
« on: August 24, 2010, 08:15:52 PM »
Any reason why this new release would require so many packages to be updated?

Also, the repo speed test is not included in this distro, and a search for 'speed' does not reveal it. What program am I looking for to include in the XFCE distro?
Thanks,
Alistair.

bigal,

The nature of all the PCLinuxOS versions is that the packages are updated as they are available from the original developers.  Some are improvements, some are security issues which have a patch, some are bug fixes, etc.

Even though your XFCE may be relatively new, there's been numerous updates over the last few weeks.  If anything in any of the original packages has changed, after your install, the first synaptic update will bring in and update all the packages that changed.

So.... the number of packages updated is a testament to the hard work of the PCLinuxOS development team.

Not sure on the speed test package you seek.  I donate so I have PASS, so I don't worry about which repo I use.

Enjoy,

putz

Package name is apt-sources-update. Should be in all repositories, as far as I know.

Thanks for the info chaps. Also, I am surprised about package update requirements. I did the update of around 300Mb as user root, then logged in as casual user. Synaptic then wanted me to download all the same packages again that were done in root! is this typical? I would have thought default performance would be once package files are downloaded, then any user login doing an update would use these previously loaded files?
Thanks,
Alistair.

I'm not sure why you did that. The only reason to ever log in as root would be as a last resort in order to fix something. Always log in as your normal user. When you want to update, using Synaptic, you will be prompted for the root password. You will only have root user privileges for that one program, until you finish using it. The next time you run it, or any other program requiring root privileges, you will be prompted to supply the root password.

OK if I had done that, then logged in as root, and did an update, would root need all those files as well?
What Im getting at is there a method that ensures that the PC has files across all sessions available.
Thanks,
Alistair.

every time you launch synaptic it takes some time to review (there is probably a better word) the packages on the system. I don't think it is downloading at this point. perhaps that is what you are seeing?

bigal,

The packages installed from Synaptic are installed system-wide, available to all users.

OK why then did it want to download them all again when I logged out from root to user - just another login session; same computer? Thanks

It shouldn't. Can you give some examples of what is to be downloaded and installed again? Package names or programs that you see in the update list would be helpful. I think you'll find that the packages you installed as root user are also there under the regular user.

EDIT: Are you clicking on the Reload, Mark All Upgrades, then the Apply buttons?

Yes, re the other questions I will check again tomorrow and advise, as I am just upgrading another PC the same way.
