[SOLVED]Thunderbird- Slow Typing
« on: August 24, 2010, 04:16:26 PM »
For some reason, when type in the subject line of an email, the text appears very slowly. Anywhere else I type is fine. Why is this happening, & how can I fix it? I'm using Thunderbird 3.1.2. I haven't checked Bugzilla yet, so I'm not sure if this is a known issue. Has anyone else experienced this?

I didn't see Thunderbird listed there, but something appears to be hogging my cpu. X seems to be at the top of the list quite a bit, with Firefox & Kwin in 2nd or 3rd. They tend to "swap places" a lot, too.

You could also check resource usage by pressing Ctrl and Esc simultaneously and then you can sort the columns by  CPU or Memory or App Name etc (note - there is also a dropdown tab in the top right which allows you to filter by different processes/programmes)
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sony Vaio SVE1513A4ESI Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.6GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB, 15.6" Intel HD Graphics 4000

Ok, I checked that & it shows basically the same thing. X seems to be using the most, but I obviously can't turn that off. In the konsole, using the "top" command shows as much as 99% of the cpu is being used!! What should I do?

I would reboot and not open any apps and then have a look at what resources are being used by using TOP or Ctrl+Esc.

Then open FFox on its own and see how much thats using;

Close FFox and open TBird and check that one out.

Do that for the main apps you use and check if one starts hogging your CPU and/or memory.

Then open ALL your main apps FFox, TBird etc and see what system resources are being used.

If you have desktop effects enabled you could try disabling that as well.

Note: sometimes a simple reboot frees an app/resource that has "locked" itself and won't release itself thus it keeps using resources.

Ok, I restarted & it made no difference. If I turn off the desktop effects, will my taskbar still turn black as it does when they're suspended? Will it disable something I might otherwise need?
