How do I change default applications in E17 (solved)
« on: August 24, 2010, 12:42:50 PM »
Hi Ive recently installed the E17 version and I am very impressed with it in general. However there are a few things I really want to customize. I would like to change the default file manager to Thunar for one as I really cant stand the one that is used by default. Also I would like to change the default media player as for some reason the default seems buggy. when I open an Avi file it plays but a box continuously flashes above the screen saying mplayer cant play the file and the flashing box cant be closed. I installed smplayer and the same box comes up when the movie starts but doesnt blink and can be closed and the movie plays normally. I realize I can just right click on files and choose open with but that is a major inconvenience. And Im certain there will be many more defaults Ill want to change as I get more into the system. Ive tried everything I could find through Google which wasnt much and what little there was was either distro specific and didnt apply to this one or was outdated and didnt work anymore. Any help would be great. If no one can tell me specifically how to change the defaults please at least point me in the direction of where the config files are located as I dont seem to even be able to find them.

An unusual side note I just installed Xine-ui and it plays my videos flawlessly and without the error message at the beginning but since installing it mplayer and smplayer wont even start to play them. This is not important to me as I feel Xine is a better player anyway and it seems to work flawlessly. Just wanted to inform of the bug in mplayer ive had.

You can disable the enlightenment filemanager in the modules, then it will also dissapear in the menu.
To use thunar you can setup the places gadget to open with thunar and add an launcher for icon on a shelve/drawer/itask-ng for quick access.

Concerning default apps with efm: right click the file you want to open/choose open with, choose application in the popup window. E17 will automatically set the choosen app as default even when there was another app set for that mimetype.
There are some modules like a pathbar and extra buttons you can add to efm to make it more functional.

Don't know about setting default apps with thunar.

Thank you smurfslover. your direction to use open with worked. I thought I had tried that but I guess I made my mistake by choosing one of the offered programs rather than clicking "open with another program". I now have my system pretty much how I want it. I disables the efile manager as you suggested. Added pcmanfm to my ibar and added my storage partitions to fstab and mtab so I can access them with pcman. While I was there I also got rid of those pesky uuids. I have to say again Im really happy to finally use Enlightenment on PcLinux. I'll mark this solved.
