Firefox and saving images.
« on: August 23, 2010, 08:50:52 PM »
Hello,

This weekend I put together a computer for my 8 year old daughter with parts I had laying around and installed PCLinuxOS 2010.7 KDE with latest updates. Here are the specs:

AMD 64 3400 2.4ghz 754pin
Asus AN8 Nforce3 Chipset
Asus 5950 ultra 256mb
1 gig Corsair Value Select PC3200 (512mb x2)
WD 80gig ata HD
HP DVDRW ata
Rosewell wireless card (Radlink Chip)

The issue Im having with Firefox is that I can right click on a image (Hunting down Hello Kitty and Pokemon wallpaper) the first time I can save the image. When I try to save a second image it will not save. I click on "save image as" and nothing happens. I have to close Firefox and start again. Each time the same thing. Saves first image, but won't do a second image. This is only happening on my daughters computer. My desktop and laptop don't have this problem. I have tried a couple of reinstalls using different disks. Also it does it before and after upgrade a freash install. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I'm not too sure what's going on with Firefox there... I'm presuming it's the latest-greatest thing from the repositories?  Are you running any add-ons for Firefox?  (Things like Flash blockers, AdBlock Plus, NoScript).  If you are, and you have some scripts blocked, it may be affecting the state of the pages where you are trying to save pix.  Does reloading the pages help free up the menus?  What does the menu look like the second time around?  Is it the normal context menu, just greyed-out, or is it a different looking menu (a clue you're looking at a Flash still photo).

Some sites try to "lock down" their graphical content - is this problem pervasive or just on selected sites?

You might try an addon called Flashgot that is designed to grab all the pix on a page and form a gallery of them.  Then you mark the ones you want to keep and they get swept into a folder.  Handy for picture intensive sites, it is.  (You wouldn't believe my aviation photos album.  Lotsa good shots of Russian aircraft.)  That might help you "work around" the problem.

Hope you get this one figured out.

Later On,
D

I can confirm this problem. The only "work around" I have found is to bookmark the image, shut down the browser (Firefox) open Firefox, click on the bookmark, and try again. It almost always works after that. The difference is that my problem is not consistent as yours. My problem only happens occasionally. It sounds like your problem is "Saves first image, but won't do a second image."

Strange indeed!

EDIT: "I click on "save image as" and nothing happens."  This is exactly the description of what happens.

same here, it happens mostly with some sites and jpg files

i usually get rid of the problem by copying the file address to any download manager and i download it from there, i think that flashgot can help there to( a firefox addon)

this problem is getting worse since the last versions of firefox

I've had similar issues recently re: saving images while using Firefox.
I found that when right clicking on the image I can access a menu where "Save Image as"... will not work; but by selecting "Properties"  it delivers a new window with the image and a different Save "button" that does work.

At least, that's how I remember it.  ;D

This is an intermittent problem for me as well. I will try MGBguy's method next time it happens and report if it solves it.

Didn't tested your tip Texstar,

but when it doesn't work on my computer, I make my Firefox-window smaller, open a Dolphin, and drag the picture from Firefox to Dolphin (and then selecting Copy from the menu)
=> that's also very fast, sometimes faster than the 'normal' method  :)

Click on the image with the right mouse button and select "view image info". There you can select all the desired pics and save them at once.  ;)

Also DownThemAll is a pretty good plug-in for Firefox to easily download files.

Thanks for the help people. :) I will give Texstar tip a try other wise I might just use Chromium. This issue bothers me more that it does my daughter. As long as she can play her online game (reason for linux) she will be happy.
