External mic problem on acer, using gnome-2010
« on: August 23, 2010, 01:49:13 PM »
Have just installed gnome_2010 on my wife's Acer Extensa 5620Z; all appears to be well, except skype. Line-out works OK, but can't get line-in (mic) to function. Seem to remember having a similar problem with kde-2009 and was never able to solve that. It works OK on windoze-XP, so I assume that I need to configure something or another. Has anyone any tips, please? Thanks.

Well, it could be simply a volume mixer issue. I use an HP Pavilion DV5 and the mic was a little hard to set up due to the complexity of the control panel. I had to set 'front mic jack' to 'mic in', and then change input source to 'front mic', and then enable my first capture and turn it up. Only then could my external mic work.

But your wife's laptop is different. A quick google search on "Acer Extenza microphone gnome" brought me to this post

I don't know if it will work for you, but if it doesn't then run the same search that I have. You may have more luck.

Thanks, angel. I read a little in the post, then changed the "microphone" setting (in skype -> options -> sound devices) to "HDA Intel, ALC268 Analog (hw:0,2)" and, lo and behold, it works to a degree. The quality is lousy, but at least there's some response (I tried all other options, with no success, BTW). Strangely, though, when I try to adjust the mic's parameters (using Volume Control) I get a message "Waiting for sound system to respond", which it never does and I have to cancel. So I don't know what I've corrupted there ???   Rebooting doesn't solve that prob, either. Anyway, it's late now, so I'll continue tomorrow. Thanks, once again.
