« on: August 23, 2010, 10:57:13 AM »
I would like to know which graphics card works best with PCLinux 2010.7 . ATI, Nvidea or other make and which model? I need one which is supported and can give me 3d capabilities and full desktop abilities.

Its a BIG question.

Some ATI's are good and some aren't / Some NVidia are some aren't, same with Intel etc....

A lot depends on which chip the card is using so its very difficult to say which manufacturer to use.

This system uses an NVidia card and it works fine. My wife's laptop has an ATI card and that too is fine....

But you may get some more advice suggesting which specific card/chips caused problems on certain systems,
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.4; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.4.38bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sony Vaio SVE1513A4ESI Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.6GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB, 15.6" Intel HD Graphics 4000

I've only used Nvidia, and don't recall having any issues at all.
There is no shame in saying "I don't know".

i've got an nVidia 6200 GeForce w/256 Mb on it.  i'm finding it a l i t t l e slow now with the new KDE 4.5, so i just bought an nVidia 7600GT w/512 Mb on it from eBay.  It should arrive by Friday and i hope it makes this thing a little faster.  My MB is a DuoCore but not Core 2 -- we didn't realize there was a difference when we bought it -- sigh.  It's got 2 Gb of RAM, but Firefox and the other programs are a little slow, like i mentioned above.  Otherwise i'm very happy with it, especially since it now runs GoogleEarth flawlessly!!!  Yeah!!

Have a great afternoon and hope this helps!  :)

Thanks for the info...Picked up a Saphirre HD3450 (ATI) with 512mb . Hope this works better than previous cards.

Through the years my standard procedure became to avoid Intel where possible. NVidia was a early Linux supporter (contra ATI) but those days ATI is a AMD thingy and things has improved on their end towards Linux. Still I support NVidia, looking back to a good time with their stuff and fairly Linux support..

nvidia is always the most recommended video card brand for linux mostly thanks to the quality of the drivers provided

usually a mid range model is a good option in price and power consumption, especially when you can find one with passive cooling

ati is a good option now but if you do a search some models are a big no, the most recent series, the 5000 is somewhat problematic but if i read well you choose a hd3000 series so it should be all ok, remember to install the drivers form synaptic

about intel, intel doesn't have video cards, those things they call video cards are a pita!  slow and problematic

Why is passive cooling better?  i'm asking bec. i just ordered an nVidia 7600GT and it appears to have a fan on it, something which i thought would be a good idea here in Mexicali where Gkrellm is now reporting my current 6200 w/256 at 147.2 F and it doesn't have a fan.

Have a great evening!  :)

if your video card doesn't have a fan you don't have to worry about a failure, you don't have to think about the replacement of that fan because it probably has 3 cables, two for power and the third for speed control

when a video card has a big heatsink, passive cooling video card you don't have to worry because the dust made it stop working and a big heatsink usually means that the temperature of the video card is lower compared to the model that requires a fan

models with passive cooling usually are avaialble after the release of the original model with a fan, this is because the model without fan is a little more complicated and less powerful/power consuming but this is good for most users under normal circumstances

Another vote for Nvidia here.  I run nothing but Nvidia cards in my machines, and have had no problems.

I've heard that ATI software and drivers are improving, but I've had enough bad experiences with them that it will take a while for them to regain my trust.

I think the inverse question (work worst) is more useful.
