bleach bit
« on: August 22, 2010, 06:32:52 PM »
Ok i looked at some of the posts. I would like to try it but I'm afraid of  wiping EVERYTHING off the system. Any suggestions on how to proceed. What are your thoughts on it's usefulness etc?

I use it regularly. It does not wipe out your system. Proceed with normal caution but do be afraid of it.

If you are unsure try one of each options at a time.

I haven't had troubles with it.

The only problem I've had with Bleachbit is that it sometimes doesn't finish cleaning the system. It says "Please wait" but nothing happens after that and it doesn't complete the task leaving files behind. The other thing I am careful about is to make sure that the "Passwords" box is unticked otherwise all my passwords in Firefox would be wiped out.

That being in a BleachBit Root?

In Root it does its job properly. Just done it and all files to be deleted have been cleared but in user it leaves, at the moment, 40MB of files that remain.

Aha, may be permissions problem in the files that remained?

(It seems BlB Root cleans system and Root's home directory but doesn't look into users ones)

You are probably right uncleV. I'll look into it.

Rikki,
When the "Please wait" message shows, leave it. It may take time to complete. And uncleV is correct; some of the available options in the user session of bleachbit need root permissions. Test the options one at a time to discover which these are.

Neal, for some reason "Please wait" takes far too long this end. I've left for as long as 15 minutes and it fails to complete. In Root it only takes about 5 minutes maximum.

This afternoon I have run Bleachbit ticking each option one after the other one and it has worked perfectly leaving "0 files" to be deleted. I'll try all the options together again, in a few hours time, and see what happens. Of course, I am not clearing every file leaving Firefox/Thunderbird passwords and System Memory unticked. The latter is experimental and may cause problems, so I am leaving well alone.

15 minutes? Don't be impatient. I've waited as long as 45 minutes. (That was after not using it for a while. ::) - I got too busy.)

I never tick the "System Memory" option, either.

It would be useful if it had a progress bar to give one some idea of how long it is going to take. Whilst it is cleaning the system you can't use the machine for anything else...
I use BleachBit when files reach something like 3 or 400MB, so I run it quite often and in my case I don't think it should take as long as 45min?
