Help blow up windows!
« on: August 22, 2010, 12:17:17 PM »
I was playing around with a couple of the effects available and can't get a few of them to work.  I use the latest version of PCLOS 2010.  I updated my video card to an XFX HD 4650 and still have the same result.  When I upgraded my video card I just shutdown, and put in the new card, restarted and ran an update to make sure I had the latest driver.  Is there anything else I should do?  I tried disabling every effect except Explosion thinking one may override it but it still didn't work.  Any ideas?

Well, that's an ATI Radeon video card. Did you install the X11-driver-video-radeonhd package available in Synaptic? Did you enable compiz? A bit more info on your hardware specs, what you've done, and what you're trying to do would go a long way towards answering your question.

I went into Synaptic and followed the instructions I found on this site (How to properly update your system):

Open Synaptic
Press Reload  To get current file list
Click Mark All Upgrades
CLick Apply

Compiz is enabled and I do see a few effects working like wobble.

I'm not sure if it did install X11-driver_video-radeonhd but under PCLinoxOS Control Center, I did the following:
- Setup the Graphical Server
- Selected:
-ATI
-Radeon HD 2000 and later (radeon/fglrx)

There's another option that says -Radeon HD 2000 and later (radeonhd/fglrx) but every time I try that one it reverts back to the one above.

Thanks for your help!

Did you install the X11-driver-video-radeonhd package available in Synaptic?

Open Synaptic. Click the Search button. Type X11-driver-video in the search field. Click Search. Scroll down to X11-driver-video-radeonhd and click it. Click Install. Then click the Apply button.

It said it was already installed.  So I selected 'Reinstall' instead.  Once it finished I rebooted.  Same result.  The monitor is an samsung lcd that's connected via a DVI to VGA adapter.  Would that adapter cause some effects to not work?

Which effects work and which not?
In Compiz or in KDE 3d-effects?
Are you fully updated? There were two vast updates for KDE recently, the second was yesterday.

Which effects work (These are all under Workspace Appearance - Desktop Effects).  As far as Compiz, when I open Control Center and go to Configure 3D Desktop Effects, I have Compiz selected but there are no additional settings or effects listed.  So I'm  not sure which ones are Compiz specific.
I tried to disable all of them and just activate them one at a time.  It appears to ignore what I select though.  I unselected all of them but I'm still able to make windows wobble when I grab them and move them.
When I drag a window to the edge it does do the cube effect and move it to the next desktop.
Windows fade in and out when I open and close them(Even though that effect is now disabled).
That's it as far as the effects under the 'Appearance' section

Under Windows Management:
Box switch appears to work as I do see thumbnails of the selected window.
The rest under Windows Management dont seem to do anything.

I can't make it snow.

These are all the same effects that worked when I used my original card (Radeon X1300)

Every once in a while when I navigate through settings it will crash and I receive a 'KDE Crash Handler' message.  Details: Executable: systemsettings PID: 4245 Signal: 11 (Segmentation fault).  Not sure if that means anything...

I think that are the Compiz effects......
=> you can configure it normally with compiz-fusion (optional: icon => in panel)

I would say, disable Compiz effects if you want to try the KDE4 effects: Compiz window management and KDE4 KWin window management doesn't work together......

Success, and ask for further explanations if this wasn't clear  ;)

Install Fusion Icon from Synaptic (type fusion in the search field) and it will come back with the Fusion Icon app and some other compiz stuff (plugins mainly - install them if you want)

Install the Fusion Icon and when that's done go to your main KMenu and under

More Applications > Configuration > you'll see the Fusion Icon - select it and it will drop an icon in the panel near the clock.(you may also have a screen appear asking if you want accept the change - which you do)

Right click on the icon and make sure Compiz is set as your Window Manager - if you want Emerald themes you can also choose it from r/clicking the Fusion Icon again.

Also on the Fusion Icon there should be an option near the top for Compiz Config Settings Manager (ccsm) if you select that (or type ccsm into a Konsole) that will take you to the Compiz settings area where you can add your Windows effects etc etc.

Thanks guys.  I disabled Compiz, restarted and sure enough the few effects I had no longer work so it looks like that was in fact what was being used.  I tried to setup Fusion by installing the Fusion Icon software from Synaptic.
The install worked but when I go to Configuration - Compiz Fusion Icon I see an item appear in the panel that looks like a blue box with an arrow in it.  It pulsates for a few seconds and then disappears.  I try to click on it during those few seconds but it doesn't do anything.  If I try to enable one of the effects in CompizConfig Settings Manager nothing happens.  No effects seem to work.  Any more ideas?  Maybe I should just reinstall pclos10.  The first card I had was a PCI card that I then replaced with an AGP card.

Under Display Settings in CompizConfig in the Outputs section it only lists:
640x480+0+0
Is that the screen resolution it's using?  If so how can I raise it?  That's nowhere near what the monitor is capable of.
Do you have to manually add different Outputs?  Could the resolution be too low for those effects to work?

Could you start Compiz Fuzion from the Konsole?
I don't remember the right command for it, but try to find it by start typing Compiz OR Fuzion and pressing [TAB] after a few lettres.....
(I can't help you with that because I'm not behind a Linux-computer at the moment)

If you succeeded to start it from the Konsole, copy then the output in a post here - and then we can see what the problem is  ;)

I am not sure but the command might be compiz-fusion.

Have you "Compiz Fusion Settings" in PC-->More Applications-->Configuration?

In More Apps - Configuration I have:
CompizConfig Settings Manager
Compiz Fusion Icon

I did a clean install last night and did not turn on Compiz Fusion at all this time since I want to try the KDE4 KWin effects like rubentje1991 mentioned.  In CompizConfig Settings Manager the only effects are those that I had previously.  Now I don't see the ones related to blowing up windows and the others I was looking for at all.  How do you setup KDE4 KWin and not use compiz Fusion?
