Problems since big update yesterday
« on: August 22, 2010, 12:31:25 AM »
Hi all, I have two issues since a 530mg update yesterday. These are by the PASS server.

1. I can't move my desktop icons around, they are "sticky" to the left, top to bottom. Align to grid etc is not ticked.

2. I have a "shadow" or "outline" on the desktop (for want of better words) that stays no matter what the desktop back ground.

Any help appreciated.

Actually, the more I use my computer this afternoon the more problems I am finding. Dolphin keeps crashing and files copied to a USB drive are being corrupted (if they actually complete)

It looks as if you have a rougue plasmoid which is not your desktop.

Quick solution is to reset your desktop which will put it back to its original look (delete .kde4 directory and re login, CARE what you currently have will be destroyed)

Long solution:

Safeties off- right click on desktop and Unlock Widgets (think you are already unlocked, hence the border), Icons do not Lock in Place

You can now move the large plasmoid with the border, move the icons, delete it if you want, edit it by clicking on the spanner icon on its side)
Perhaps move it more centrally so you know what it is.

Safeties back on - right click on desktop and Lock Widgets, Icons to Lock in Place

Next right click on the desktop and select Folder View Settings > Location - select Show Desktop Folder which is /home/Desktop via Dolphin.

With the widgets locked no more border around you large plasmoid if you still have it.

Not sufficient from my experience. And you have to delete it from another user's account. If I delete it here immediately a new .kde4 subdirectory is created with current configs.

One has to reinstall kde4-config from Synaptic in order to revert to the default (initial) state of KDE.

Sorry but as a simple user I have no idea where to find the advisory but I did reboot the PC before posting. My install has become a mess.

Thanks

And now my clock has gone except for a small part of the hands. Sorry to say but PCL has (in my case) has become to unstable to use as a working machine.

OK, I'm not trying to be smart here but as a financial contributor I've had access to the PASS server. Is it possible this software is a bit like Mandriva's "cooker" (not quite right, a little BETA)?

Am I better to drop the PASS, I'm still happy to financially contribute?

It's KDE I suppose.

Did you try to reinstall kde-config by synaptic? If you don't know how I'll tell you.
After reinstalling you have to logout or better reboot for changes to take place.
After that you should be with the initial state of KDE.

Yes, PCLOS was and is the simplest and fully working out of the box system for me. But even PCLOS is not a God ;) ;D

So forum members don't post answers to what you've already tried can you post back saying what does and doesn't work when you've tried solving problems.
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

"And now my clock has gone except for a small part of the hands."

The clock is a widget.

Right click desktop, Unlock Widgets

Move mouse to clock which will now have some controls by the side. Resize and move as you wish, or delete and put another in its place.

When done Lock your widgets and Lock your Icons into place for safeties sake (good practice),

Phil

Hi, thanks for your reply. I did a search in synaptic for "kde-config" but nothing was found.

It's "kde4-config" (not kde-config).

That's right, I'm very sorry, kde4-config. :-[
Thank you, JohnW!
I've written it in first post right but in the second missed the 4.

Thanks UncleV and JohnW, that solved it. It reset the desktop to a "new install".
