[SOLVED] Desktop: No Preview - Folders/Images
« on: August 21, 2010, 04:27:15 PM »
Up until the next to the last update of KDE4 if I moused over a JPEG I'd get  a thumbnail and if I moused over a folder it would open and I could select a file inside. Now neither  happens. Tried search and found one similar post where there was no replies and one that gave an answer I couldn't understand. Tried looking in KCC for a setting but didn't find one. I don't use Compz. Tried with Desktop efects both enabled and disabled in KCC. Minime fully updated this afternoon. Nvidia video card.

Same problem here! Tried everything I could think of to get the folder previews to appear but I am beginning to think that this is permanent.  I really liked the previews in folder view it was one of the reasons I was drawn to KDE 4. Not a show stopper but my dad thought that was so cool.

So judging from the lack of replies I assume the KDE Devs killed these features and there is no solution?

I lost this capability too, and am not so very happy about it. It sounds like a KDE bug to me.

the feature is still there. make sure your system is fully updated and rebooted. when you point at a folder shortcut on the desktop, it gets highlighted and you see two pluses on the left side of the icon. the top plus is to select it, the botom plus, when you click on it, opens the folder contents preview with files/folders inside. it seems they made the feature non automatic, which is sort of OK. if you accidentaly pointed at a folder icon on the desktop it would always bring up the folder preview even if you didn't want it, which can be a bit irritating.  :)

Me too - for Jpegs I only see the top + for selecting which changes to a " - " for deselecting

On folders I see the same as above except for the short-cut "curved-arrow" symbol

Fully updated and no bottom + here either. And the top + seems worthless. Just mousing over highlights it so the top + doesn't even seem needed.

Same with me an I miss that. Was nice to not open a folder to get to one document. Where could it be?

Hi
I've seen this mentioned before. If you click just beneath the upper + sign, a preview should open in a desktop folder.

And the top + seems worthless

It's useful if you want select various icons - can just press the + on each icon and they are then "grouped"

I'd tried that before but knowing it was supposed to work I kept trying and fifth try BINGO. So once again the KDE devs redo something that worked fine and make it less intuitive.

Seriously thank you for explaining. I'd already given up and assigned a keyboard shortcut to the most often used file in the folder. This knowledge though will help me with images.

A good tip. Useful -- and necessary as it's hard to imagine anything less intuitive.

it might have something to do with the desktop theme. since the disappearance of the transparent panel, i use air desktop theme instead of oxygen and both pluses are there on the desktop icons.

You might be on to something micheal. Changed theme from Oxyzone to Air and the little 'down arrow' icons appeared -- which let me preview the inside of my desktop folders.
