Well, uncleV, I can't say that I understand this invisible activity stuff.  I can tell you that I haven't configured any apps to auto-start, and I haven't enabled any 3D effects.

What I did just now was to go to the pager settings and un-check "Different widgets for each desktop."  After doing that, each session starts off at Desktop #1.  If I put the check mark back, each session starts off at Desktop #4.

But having "Different widgets for each desktop" unchecked also means I can't have different wallpapers on each desktop right?  So, I don't know, I think I'd rather have sessions starting in the wrong virtual desktop.

But it does seem to have something to do with that "Different widgets for each desktop" setting.

As a walk around try to set some program to start in your desktop #1. (this feature doesn't work with Compiz)

Well, I can see how to set up a program to auto-start, but I don't see how to set it to start up in a particular desktop.  And I'm not sure that I want an app auto-starting in one of my desktops.

I just want to say, I really appreciate that you've taken the time to try to help out with this.

But, I've never seen this type of behavior in any other desktop environment or window manager I've ever used.  The normal behavior is always that whatever desktop or workspace you were in when you logged out, that's the desktop or workspace you're in when you log back in.  Plain and simple.  Seems to me that something is just broken in KDE 4.5.0.  Maybe it'll get fixed soon.

It certainly sounds "non-intuitive."  What happens if you uncheck Different widgets, then save session while on D1, then restart, then recheck Different widgets while on D1?  Something changed your default desktop at one point (D2 - D4) so maybe you can reset the default to D1 somehow.

I have the same problem and can reproduce it at will.
The problem seems to be with the pager its self or how its applying its settings.
In the Pager Settings, Virtual Desktops, Desktop Tab. there is an option check box called "Different widgets for each desktop" when this option is checked(enabled) KDE4.5 loads to the last Virtual Desktop created by the pager. Uncheck this option and KDE will load to desktop 1. Personally I would like to use the page with the  "Different widgets for each desktop" enabled but I haven't found a fix for it yet.

I did tried disabling "Different widgets for each desktop", deleting all desktops except for desktop 1 of course logging out and back in. then with the page added the 3 desktops back so i had 4 desktops again, re enabled  "Different widgets for each desktop" and logged out and back in again. No joy loaded back to desktop 4

Hope this helps.

I am on PCLOS 2010 KDE.

There are at least two ways you can set a program to start/run in a particular desktop.
The one I used is:
Open the program, right-click on the windows bar, Advanced-->Special Windows Settings (or Special Applications Settings)-->tick "Desktop" and choose the behaviour and on which desktop.
I think you need different desktop activities enabled for this to work.

Yeah, that's exactly what I saw here as well.

That's how it looks to me, too.

Yeah, I tried doing that a few different times.  I was thinking that maybe the last virtual desktop that I added a widget to would turn out to be the default desktop, something like that.  But it doesn't seem to work that way.

The default here got changed from D2 o D4 somewhere in between when I changed the number of desktops to 1 and when I got everything set back up with four desktops.  Not sure what happened there.

Have you solved this yet?

It started happening again for me after a recent update.
I went to Configure your Desktop>Workspace Appearance>Window Behavior>Virtual Desktop and unchecked "Different widgets for each desktop"
It now boots to Desktop 1 again.  However what you do if you want to use different widgets for each desktop I don't know!

No haven't solved it.  Haven't done updates for maybe a week, by the way.

It isn't a major issue for me, I guess.  I'd rather keep "Different widgets for each desktop" checked so that I can have different wallpaper set-ups on each desktop, even if it means booting into the wrong desktop when I first start things up.

No problems with this in another distro where I have KDE4 installed.

Hi
This is not marked as solved so,  in case you still have the problem ...
I had the problem, i think it is now solved.

The credit goes to icewind on freenode's #kde, =
rename or delete the file ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc
It worked for me at least

Now I FINALLY start in desktop 1 :)

I renamed the file ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc and it stopped my system from booting to Desktop 4
and I still have all of my individual desktop backgrounds .

Thanks !
