I'm in the same boat as O-P. Amarok works ok. Here are my phonon packages installed. I use xine playback in kde config settings. I suspect some crashes may have to do with ones music collection, how the files were encoded, tagged or named.

libphonon4-4.4.2-1pclos2010
python-qt4-phonon-4.7.4-2pclos2010
phonon-xine-4.4.2-1pclos2010
phonon-vlc-0.2.0-2pclos2010
libphononexperimental4-4.4.2-1pclos2010
qt4-designer-plugin-phonon-4.7.0-0.5pclos2010

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

qt4-designer-plugin-phonon-4.7.0-0.5pclos2010

Thanks for that list, Texstar.  Of those, here are the ones that are not installed here:

python-qt4-phonon-4.7.4-2pclos2010
phonon-vlc-0.2.0-2pclos2010
qt4-designer-plugin-phonon-4.7.0-0.5pclos2010

I'll try installing those and see if it makes a difference.

As for some the crashes being related to one's music collection, that might be true.  I do have the same version of Amarok (I think -- using KDE 4.5.1 in both) working fine in another distro on this computer, same music collection.  So maybe some packages are installed over there that aren't installed over here, or some settings are different or whatever, and Amarok over here gets tripped up on certain songs in my collection.

All are installed yet it still crashes at startup.  Thanks for the suggestion though.

I installed the ones I was missing and rebooted.  Amarok crashed on the second song.

You're having better luck than I am.  I can't even boot with the Xine backend.

FWIW, searching synaptic for phonon, I have the following packages installed and no problems with either Amarok or Juk:

libphonon4
libphononexperimental4
phonon-xine

After Amarok updated today I decided to try again; first with GStreamer and then with Xine backends.  GStreamer now plays consecutive tracks smoothly with no skipping, chopping or stuttering.  Too, it doesn't crash after multiple tracks.  On the otherhand Xine still crashes Amarok on startup even after the update.  In the end, I have no complaints about GStreamer and no qualms about using it instead of Xine.  Whatever the problem is with Xine or my configuration it can be worked around using GStreamer backend and I will merely use it instead of Xine.

For the Amarok fans here, that need an alternative: Install clementine. You might find out this player looks quite familiar.....

An interesting side note, Clementime worked perfectly with Xine backend even though Amarok would not.
