Hey guys,  am trying to install the network driver for a Dell Dimension 2400 network driver but every time I install the driver I keep getting an error message, with the exclamation mark. But it is the correct driver...

what does the error msg say? the more info you give when asking for support, the easier it is to zero in on a possible problem and solution.

Which version of PCLinuxOS are you using?

What network card do you have?

What driver are you trying to install?

What error message are you getting?

Are you doing the install/setup via the PCC (Configure Your Computer)  Network & Internet section?
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sony Vaio SVE1513A4ESI Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.6GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB, 15.6" Intel HD Graphics 4000

Do you have the latest driver from Dell?
Does it work in  a liveCD?

I would try the liveCD and if it works, then the driver is bad, then you would need the previous driver from dell. If it does not work, then the card is toast and you will need to add a NIC (3Com is in WinXP drivers, so the easiest to add, or a realtek(sp?) NIC).

Good luck!

I notice this file bcm4sbxp.sys is known to cause driver problems, I did some research that indicate the registry is corrupt when driver errors happens in windows xp. I did a registry scan to fix the problem but the problem persist.....

I don't have a spear NIC card so am trying to get this one working in the mean time any more ideas guys???

Use PCLOS!  ;D

Seriously, if you're going to try the LiveCD on a 2400, they can be problematic for video.  What chipset is in it?  Intel i845, or i865?  Set the Video Memeory in the BIOS to 8Meg, and use VESA mode from the Live CD boot menu.
The NIC should be fine (I've not had issues with the B44x chipsets in PCLOS at all!)

Is your cabling and/or network OK?  Problem could be external.

What kernel are you using?  I couldn't get kernel 2.6.33.7 or kernel 2.6.32.17 to work on my Dell laptops due to an error with the broadcom interface. However, kernel 2.6.33.5 and kernel 2.6.31.12 both worked fine.  muungwana pointed me in the right direction. See here:

I note on the Dell website that the latest driver, 3.63, A03, was optional.  If you have the original Dell driver CD you might try that.  Also, what BIOS version are you running?   You might need to update the BIOS to use in order to use the 3.63, A03 driver.  I had that problem on a Dell my son use to have.
