i have rebooted

Right click the desktop. At the bottom of the menu, does it say Desktop settings, or Desktop view settings? If so you need to change your desktop to Folder View to get your desktop icons to show.

The update probably bump you from kde 4.4 to kde 4.5. It was a major update and things like this are bound to happen to a few users.

Are you asking for support or only sharing your update experience?

Had the same problem with my Desktop 1, changed to folder view and my icons came back but I am missing one and now right clicking on a menu item in the Application Launcher Menu and selecting "Add to Desktop" no longer works although "Add to Panel" does.

Anyone else have this problem?  Is there an alternative way to add desktop icons?

Yes, I had unlocked widgets.  If you don't the option "Add to Desktop" is not displayed.

A bit more info:
I have four desktops.  Right licking on a menu item does add an icon but, whichever desktop I have displayed it always adds it to Desktop 3!  Hence I didn't see it when working on Desktop 1.
