[SOLVED] Last update broke KDE4 in work laptop
« on: August 16, 2010, 09:20:49 AM »
Today update broke the install on my work laptop at 9:00 o'clock in the morning, I'm working and posting this from my back up live DVD.

After a large update form the pclosusers repository I rebooted and the graphical desktop was slow to initiate, the widgets (weather and folder view) didn't finish and just see some kind of parenthesis in the middle, there was a little bar flashing at the right of the task bar and that was all. I could move the pointer with the mouse but was of no use because nothing worked if I clicked.

Maybe is an incomplete update but there was no warning (usually there is one) I use to have an alternative desktop for this cases but since I installed just a week ago I had not decided which I want.

Any ideas?

EDIT.

Updated reinstall broke again after being working two days, showed the same symptoms but this time I think I know what happened.

I wanted to make a remaster of the now updated PCLOS and emptied all the folders in /home/crow/  including the images folder, I was using an image inside that folder as my wallpaper.

The remaster didn't run and I saw the same symptoms (desktop didn't work, a bar flashing at the right of the taskbar, etc.) didn't know what to do and rebooted, my desktop was broke again. This time I had a backup DE  XLDE, finished the session and changed to LXDE and all worked fine.

I remembered about the image, copied said image to the right folder, went to KDE and....  didn't work.  I won't try anything since I have lots of work, I'm updating my reinstall again and I will be careful in the future.

Another thing, I deleted the wallpaper in LXDE, rebooted and LXDE just showed me a background color, it worked fine. I guess KDE4 is too temperamental.

Mine got screwed up too. After what was like a 2 hour update. I couldn't shutdown. Had to make a cold shutdown. When I booted up again I had no desktop icons. The system tray was all different.

Various other little messed up tidbits.

I was going to start my own thread about this but thought I would see first if anyone else had the problem.

And here you are with a messed up laptop like me. Wonder how widespread this is?

Nop, but now it seems is not an incomplete update  ???

I will wait until this afternoon before reinstalling from the DVD but I'll hold the updates until all this is corrected, I seem to remember that there were many KDE4 updates

Yes I too saw there were a lot of KDE updates. I sure hope I don't have to reinstall. I get so used to synaptic updates just working that this caught me off guard.

I see that there is another thread about the strange icon but I didn't get that problem. That would be better than this one.

I posted in another thread today that Update Notifier was warning me not to update.  I had installed Update-Notifier about a day ago.  I have been installing some software packages.  Over the lat few days, I've installed Xine, Google Earth, GQviewer, and VrtualBbox.  (the ones I can remember off the top of my head.)  I also installed Desktop Environments Gnome, LXDE, XCFE, and E17.

This is an upgrade install of 2010.7 carried out about a week ago.  I did the entire update after the initial upgrade install.  But since then, have not done any update installs.  Just software and DEs.

My system is still running.  The only thing I did not do is the most recent update listed.  I didn't update due to the warning from Update-Notifier.  I thought perhaps Update-Notifier was in error, which is why I posted in the other thread.

Hope this info in helpful at some level.
Toonfully,

Mark

This remaster is from August 9, I have a remaster of a home desktop from August 13 (the most recent), if it flies in this machine I will reinstall from there, unless there is a way to install another DE.

If I have enough time this afternoon could try to reinstall, try to install another DE and use it instead of KDE4, did that for months before switching to PCLOS 2010.1 at work.

Too late for me to get update notifier. Something should  have been more clear if we were not supposed to update. I would have thought some warning would have been posted. If I missed it then shame on me.

Welcome Fredo  :'(

15 minutes DVD Backup install and I'm up and running  ;D

Now I have my system as it was back in August 9  :)

I have to call the friend who insisted in a remaster of my install for his own laptop, his insistence saved me

Should I mark this thread as partially solved?

I love you guys. ;)

I am sorry to read about the grief you guys are having, but you, Crow, my fine-feathered hermano, need to do more than just call your friend. A blue agave libation seems well-deserved...
