I have the same problem.
I did a big update last night and this morning found a message in synaptic saying many packages weren't available. I followed the screen instructions and it told me to fix broken packages.
I followed instructions and everything seemed O.K. so I shut down.
This morning, when I powered up I got a login screen with a box labelled "local host. localdomain"
I entered  my user name then hit Return and it asked for my password but when I tried to enter password it would not accept any imput so I am locked out of KDE4 until I find a fix.
Any sugestions?

Well the scourge continues for me.

My live usb with persistence is now toast. It no longer will boot in persistence mode. More errors listed than windows has licenses ??? ??? ???

I am running in live mode though and it works fine. I was able to boot this morning and I got a synaptic message similar to what was mentioned about broken packages. It told me to reboot and that is all she wrote.

Only good news for me is that I have everything backed up. Even all my firefox bookmarks. Did that right after the first Synaptic assassination  of yesterday.

I would imagine there is no easy fix. Or is there any fix at all. Kind of sucks. >:(

Try to login as root with your root password then type apt-get update and then type apt-get dist-upgrade then type reboot.

You need to check the word Blue before Agave, there are different types of Agave and some can give you a bad "next day"

Thanks again Tex but it didn't take.
Knowing I could not boot into persist mode, I booted into live mode and proceeded with your instructions.
I imagine it was because it was live mode but I do not know that for sure.

I've seen it advertised but never saw one in front of me  :P  looks good  :)

It seems a blended tequila: white with añejo  I wonder how good is that.

I don't like tequilas that are too soft (sissy tequilas says my friends) those are made for export, neither like those that feels like if a cat go backwards through your throat

I guess you only find the right tequila for you tasting many  ;D  sometimes (if you are lucky) find a tequila fair where you can try different brands, I attended one in Puebla some years ago.
