VGN-NW21MF
« on: August 16, 2010, 01:43:48 AM »
I'm back! After my VBox adventure with many...many distros I've come back to PCLOX. Why? Because I downloaded latest E17 just out of sheer curiosity and... it works!
I tried several other solutiotns...none of them worked! Can you believe that? I know you can ;)

Only on PCLOX I can access my ISP! After almost 3 weeks of painful endeavours with Ubu I com to the conclusion I'm in love with PCLOX  8)

But as a false beginner I've got to ask you to help me make it work even better.

VGN-NW21MF is my laptop - where to find the right drivers? How to install them best?

awaiting :)

edit//not so golden after all? I opened one of the gfx programmes and from that point was unable to use FF - crash.  ???
Also, I mounted one of my win7 disks but couldn't see the unmount option under rght click - is it redundant?

The drivers for what?

I can only speak of KDE4 ......  there is a device notifier in the tray that provides the function of unmounting devices/partitions.
Maybe specific questions about E17 would be best posed in

korbennn:

Two points:

I have never been able to get E17 to run on this computer, the liveCD crashes while trying to set up the video card. All the other versions work, but not E17, so I can't help you with anything peculiar to that release. I would if I could, but I can't, so I won't.

The proper short hand for PCLinuxOS is PCLOS, not PCLOX. We know what you mean, but it still rankles a bit to see it with that X on the end. We don't go well with cream cheese and bagels; just computers.  ;D ;D

Found the un-mount in PCLOS! :D

I need to halt with the drivers... looking around the settings and slowly but steadily moving...forward? hopefully :D

For now I can't make Opera install perhaps cause I don't know how to do it the right way - is rpm the good one? when I open it with synaptic nothing happens... so downloaded tar.gz and tar.bz2 from Opera com.

I've got a feeling an updated HOW - TO for zealous beginners is what would bear more friuts instead of coming every 5 minutes with more basic questions... do we got one for me? :D

OP, help mi out bro!
strange but this time wireless was not configurable the way I saw it the other time - in Net Center the configure button is dead... I know, it's only LiveCD but is it possible to load some drivers on Monday and not to load them on Tuesday? wired works :D

All the drivers and applications you need will be in the repository and accessible by using Synaptic.
Do not use downloaded files to install apps in PCLOS.

There are instructions in the Forum about how to best look after your install.

Yes you can load software while running live ......  and it will still be there if you do not shut down. There is no where to store your changes on a CD/DVD so they are kept in memory.

You could do it if you have a USB flash stick to run the LiveOS from and your changes can be stored on the same flash stick.

regards.

The quick tutorial on Synaptic is, Click the Synaptic icon, give the root password when asked, then click Reload --> Mark All Upgrades --> Apply, in that order, then Apply again from the confirmation window. Once the system is fully upgraded to the current level, click the Search button, then enter the desired application you wish to install, opera in this case. Press the Enter key or click the Search button in that window. When you see the application displayed, click the box in front of it. There will be a Mark for Installation entry in the drop down menu; choose it. If other dependencies are needed they will be shown; accept them. Once the application is marked, click Apply, and Apply again, in the confirmation window. The application will then be both downloaded and installed.

You can do that from the Opera site, but it's frowned upon. The newest Opera has shown problems with some sites, including this one. When that's fixed, Tex will add it to the repos. Until then, the one in the repo is the latest stable release that does not show these errors.

10.61 is in the repository. You might need to uninstall the existing version (10.70) before 10.61 will show as available.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

My bad, gents;  oftentimes I scan texts w/o understanding...

Opera is here with me and you can be proud of me too  ;D

//as previously noticed, the configure button in Net Center is not clickable - it WAS on the 1st run of my LiveCD - strange...

BUt I managed to connect - the trick is to load the NetApplet and use it to configure my WiFi, don't know if it's the way it's supposed to be but I'm happy enough lol

Next question: when using the WiFi the LED flickers - do we have a command to change it to continuous? It's irritating...

The default applets are very nice and stylish but I much prefer the PLAIN looks - can it be set as default/ can I change all my applets to this liking at once not one by one? Not only nicer to the eye but also enables the temp applet to show temp correctly.

No one knows?  I can't believe it guys!

Next Qs: the iso comes loaded with printers drivers - how to get rid of those?

On lxde the clock resizes itself depending on the digits in use so to say..it looks as if it was moving... how to change it?

How many of us would you think have the same hardware as you?

I have never seen a wifi connection which did not 'flicker' its indicator ......

As already said ........  install and uninstall packages/apps using Synaptic.

Ok, thanks.

The Fn works only on Gnome - how to make it work on e17 and lxde?
