Hopefully this issue gonna be solved with the KDE SC 4.5.1 release.
It's a KDE SC 4.5.0 bug, not a PCLinuxOS one.
It's a known bug by the KDE developers: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=232054

Texstar warned me that KDE SC 4.5.0 is a bit rough in use and most issues wil be solved in 4.5.1 or 4.5.2.

JohnW

JohnW can you try the dbus package in testing on pass and see if it helps your issue? I can't test because my dolphin is working ok.

"Added an updated dbus package to testing on PASS. Please reboot after installation. This update contains a patch that may help with dolphin crashing. I am not able to fully test as my dolphin hasn't been crashing. Also test to make sure external devices plugged into your usb port ie usbkeys and cameras still activate the kde notifiction area."

Having same problem in Dolphin and Konq. When clicking on a file I get a white box, then it freezes then a crash box. With the good, comes some bumps in the road.

Tested updated packages from testing.

Tested Dolphin with a usb external hdd with information panel enabled and get the same issue.
Output terminal:wim@localhost ~]$ dolphin
QMetaObject::invokeMethod: No such method DolphinApplication::loadCommandLineOptionsForNewInstance()
"/usr/bin/dolphin(8105)" Soprano: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown - The name org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstorage was not provided by any .service files"
"/usr/bin/dolphin(8105)" Soprano: "QLocalSocket::connectToServer: Invalid name"
"/usr/bin/dolphin(8105)" Soprano: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown - The name org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstorage was not provided by any .service files"

Dolphin with a usb external hdd without information panel ( with F11) and have no issues
Output terminal :[wim@localhost ~]$ dolphin
QMetaObject::invokeMethod: No such method DolphinApplication::loadCommandLineOptionsForNewInstance()
[wim@localhost ~]$

Dolphin without a usb external hdd with information panel enabled and have no issues.
No output from terminal.

Seems usb devices give problems with Dolphin with the information panel enabled.

It's a hard drive install. It had been running fine until a fairly big update about a day ago. Haven't had much chance to use the computer till today, when I found similar problems others were having. Other than the update I haven't done anything that might have contributed.

I can produce the Dolphin issue when usb devices are connected (with external HDD's or USB-sticks).
Without  usb devices runs Dolphin without issues.
With usb devices connected and the information panel disabled (F11 work-around) Dolphin runs fine.

From the KDE release team:

List:       kde-release-team
Subject:    KDE SC 4.5.0: Dolphin instable
From:       Peter Penz <peter.penz19 () gmail ! com>

Hi,

I'm very sorry for noticing you that late, but my timing to recognize the root
cause of some Dolphin related crashes was very bad this time: Dolphin might be
instable in KDE SC 4.5.0, when tooltips or the information panel are enabled.

Sebastian Trüg and I provided two patches on the 4.5 branch that solve this
issues (SVN commit 1157302 and 1158299 [1]), but of course it is too late now
for 4.5.0.

If possible, I think this should be mentioned in the release notes as known
issue. A suggestion of the text might be: "Dolphin might be instable in KDE SC
4.5.0, when tooltips or the information panel are enabled. A fix will be
available for KDE SC 4.5.1."

Some background info: Dolphin receives the meta data shown in tooltips or the
information panel in a thread, to assure that the user interface does not get
blocked. Before KDE SC 4.5 it just used Nepomuk to get the data, since 4.5 it
uses KFileMetaInfo as fallback when Nepomuk is disabled. It turned out, that
KFileMetaInfo is not reentrant, which of course is a disaster when being used
in a thread. I initially thought this is related to a d-bus issue
(https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17754), but sadly was wrong here
:-(

Best regards,
Peter

[1] I still need to go manually through all tooltip and information panel
related bug reports, to set them to resolved. But I did not want to do this in
a hurry, so the patches currently don't contain BUG: tags.

PS: I'm offline today, but should be available again tomorrow.

Sorry for the noise, the SVN commit numbers are 1157302 and 1158288 (not
1158299).

Did testing latest updated kdelibs on PASS and  didn't solve the issue

My comment on testers mailing list today:

If SVN numbers 1157302 and 1158288  are added to kdelibs ??

The latest updated kdelibs didn't solve the issues :(

See what 4.5.1 brings next week.

A bit disappointed  to another users who did report this issue.
They didn't send a output from terminal what happens Dolphin when
Information Panel is enabled or disabled.
USB- devices are connected or not (formatted in ext(x) or VFAT32).
Was busy with this issue after 4.5.0. released on PASS.
Found a work-around. See what the next KDE SC 4.5 brings. :)
Also a lot of thanks to Texstar to trying solve this issue.

Maybe in combination with that updates from Texstar on the PASS-server, or not?

I believe that those updates are already in the regular repos, so I don't think so.

The new kdelibs didn't solve the issue.

Google with "dolphin crashes in KDE 4.5.0" and see it's not a PCLOS problem.

All distros with KDE SC 4.5.0 in repos have  problems with Dolphin 1.5.0.

I don't seem to be have the freeze up and crashes when I switched back to kernel 2.6.32.11-pclos2.bfs. and the kdelib update. The only test drive I have given so far, was transferring files from one partition to another in a split screen, and opening up alot of folders in the tree using Dolphin. Konq was also hanging for awhile, and that seems to have gone away

My problems went away when I disabled the information panel in dolphin and the previews, but that's not a workaround, it's crippling.
