KDE 4.5 Blur Effect Can't Be Enabled

I updated to KDE 4.5 and when I tried to enable the Blur effect I get this plasma notification

The following Desktop effects could not be enabled

What Blur does it blurs the background behind semi-transparent windows. I am using a transparent qtcurve theme and it would help to have this effect. Can anyone help?

I don't use the blur effect but mentioned that after the last huge kde-updates the main panel, which was almost transparent, now blurs the background; the same for the windows decoration.
Did you get that kdu-updates?

I did not set 'blur', but after the updates it was enabled. This killed kwin, so no desktop effects. I remembered this post about 'blur' and disabled it and was enable to re-enable desktop effects.

I have enabled KDE's with many cool effects and they doesn't seem corrupted here.

I am talking about kde and kwin, not compiz. I've had bad luck with compiz on my intel video since kde4 began.

Yea the Kwin effect blur came with the last big update..... hopefully I can figure it out cause I really want that effect

Blur is a Kwin effect and Kwin doesn't handle plasma. I have a transparent panel using the glassified theme.... Then again I have Kwin effects on.

Known issues: There is no updated fake transparent patch available at this time for KDE 4.5.0. You taskbar/panel will no longer be transparent when using the glassified theme with non-gl video drivers.

If you want to enable blur in kwin, be certain that under desktop effects-Advanced that GL mode is selected as blur requires GL to work.

However, you may also want to enable Display FPS as blur is still quite buggy and on my machine (nvidia 6200 graphics card) slowed the screen FPS from 100fps with no windows showing and no action to 27fps!  CPU usage also went up and all applications felt slow.

This may be a case of be careful what you wish for!

I got the same notification when trying to activate blur, I think the reason could be due to the graphics card my machine is using. When I checked kwinrc in ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc I found this;
[Blacklist][Blur]
Advanced Micro Devices=DRI R600:-:7.8.1,DRI R600:-:7.8.2
Ati=Radeon HD 3650:-:3.3.9901
NVIDIA=GeForce 6150/PCI/SSE2:-:195
my guess is that if your graphics card is blacklisted, blur won't work.
