More specifically, pclinux-gnome-2010.12 on an HP Mini 110-3101se, second generation netbook, for which it could be very well-suited, except that there's no speaker, only headphone jack sound.

Other, similar posts are for KDE and/or relate to subtly older, more expensive netbooks. The Gnome 2010.12 version Sound and GMixer settings appear to be limited, but can anyone offer some useful advice, please.

Meanwhile, there's nothing wrong with the hardware.
