where did VB go?
« on: August 11, 2010, 05:36:56 PM »
PCLOS 2010 - KDE fully updated running on a / and /home installation

Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.33.5-pclos1.a64

I had installed with with Get Oracle VM VirtualBox. After getting the Guest addition I hadn't futzed with it in anyway other installing XP and setting some of the settings

Last night I did an update and everything went fine. After that, without closing Synaptic, I chose 'remove' Kernel 2.6.33.7 (I was booted into 2.6.33.5) and hit apply

When I removed the kernel I chose 'mark for remove' not 'remove all'.

That went fine and I saw a message about virtualbox extensions being removed or something to that effect and closed it, and exited Synaptic.

Today I went to use VM (link on my desktop) and it's not there. Check the menu under emulators and it's not there. Hit f2 and start to type it and all I get is Documentation for and Get Oracle . . .

My directories/file are all fine so its just a simple reinstall but wa' happened?

Was it removing the kernel that did it?

I find that a few strong early-evening bourbons have a way
of blowing open whatever trap it is that I've construed
for myself by day's end, allowing me at least a brief review,
past the flying, incendiary wreckage, of the roads not taken."

It was updating the getvirtualbox script that did it. It used to wait until run to remove the old version, this time the old version was removed as part of the getvirtualbox installation. Just click the get virtualbox icon and let it do it's thing.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

It is always a good idea to look at a list of package that are going to be removed when doing an update and then look if there are packages that are going to be updated with similar names.

it is not a good sign to see packages being removed without any new packages taking their place.

.. 3 things are certain in life : death, taxes and software bloat ..
.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..

Thanks for the explanation OP

and thanks muungwana for the reminder to take 5 seconds and click on the arrows and see what is being removed.

But that wouldn't have worked in this case because VirtualBox wasn't installed from a package but from a script. All Synaptic would have shown is that GetVirtualBox was being upgraded.
